Like Stewart or not, she could actually win. The BAFTAs have become extremely accurate with the Acting categories in recent years (they went 4/4 6/10 times in the last decade) and they have been indicative of upsets (Colman, Streep, Cotillard). Stewart could win BAFTA considering she’s playing Princess Diana, and I honestly don’t think the jury will be a problem for her. Even if she doesn’t sweep, she could pull a Colman or Streep or Cotillard
Despite my LONG defense of Kristen Stewart as an actor, I’m still skeptical precisely because she’s playing Diana. It’s not that it’s a high bar, it’s that…it’s not the sort of role I imagine Stewart excelling at? There’s a reason her best performances are in films like Clouds of Sils Maria where she can create anew while at the same time keeping her own trademark actor tics intact. She’s trying to play Diana, which will require some amount of transformation at the very least…and…I would’ve been scared for anyone doing this role, but Stewart is just not the transformative actor (as I argued) one imagines in this role. The rest of the cast has people like Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, Jack Farthing, Amy Manson (as Anne Boleyn lol, remember that). Those are all character actors I can easily imagine in a British royal film, both one that’s very weird and one that’s not.
I hope I’m wrong because I quite like her and I tend to root for people when they have this many haters lol.
Fingers crossed, I’m rooting for her because I want people to be nicer lol, but Diana being her first Oscar nom? Mmmmmmmmm
BUT……interesting that you brought up Cotillard. That’s the campiest, most out-there, but also brilliant portrayal in a biopic that…yeah, it could potentially follow. Cotillard’s win is one of the best wins ever, but it’s a VERY VERY hard act to follow.

Can I ask: what are you getting out of this? A dollar for every unnecessary hater post?

Doubt all you want, but she has actual precedent. Predicting someone to flop simply because you don’t like them is not gonna work out for you. If it did, I would’ve predicted Chicago 7 getting no nominations last year. Obviously, that wasn’t gonna happen. Kristen can win, don’t run away from it

Potentially, but I’m feeling like Stewart will be our winner considering everything we know and she could just wow us

She has a good director and hopefully a good script to work with. We’ve also seen people win Oscars for something out of their wheelhouse that they just do amazingly well, at least in the eyes of the Academy. Emma Stone in La La Land is a great example. There’s hope for you out there

A precedent of awful acting. Kristen Stewart couldn’t even transform into Joan Jett or Jean Seberg. So how on Earth will she “wow” us as Princess Diana? LOL!
July 27, 2021 at 1:10 pm #1204366205I doubt she will win but she likely will be the early frontrunner. She isn’t a bad actress at all but if the movie is anything like Judy , Kristen will not manage to win given she does not have that veteran comeback narrative but who knows.

Everything Everywhere All at Once for everything, everywhere, all at onceJuly 27, 2021 at 1:26 pm #1204366237I think Stewart is a normal actress, she wasn’t spectacular and she wasn’t terrible in the recent movies I’ve seen with her. But this aggressive discussion about her talent is so tiring and repetitive that I VERY hope Spencer is undeniable.

I couldn’t agree more tbh. I want her to sweep just to see the meltdowns

I don’t mind any actresses winning tbh. I like Ana D ,Halle and Kirsten or even Frances. Its going to be another gong show this year. Just my guess no actresses will be dominating this year just like last year. Every year it’s getting more competitive in the Best Actress category. Does sweeping the awards season gone especially for the best actress?
