I’ll keep an eye on Freaks Out by Gabriele Mainetti, official competition at Venice. Mainetti’s previous work, Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot, was an eccentric and brilliant take on superhero movies and this film seems like a good mix between Fellini, Tarantino and Gondry. Could very well take an important prize and become Italy’s submission for this category.

For France, I don’t think Sciamma’s film is going to be the one selected. It’s getting really poor distribution even in big cities and is not really a huge success both commercially and critically.

Titane is not getting selected in a million years.

I have huge doubts regarding Laurent’s film.

I think it will be between Bonne Mère (Hafsia  Herzi) which is getting great to excellent reviews and Benedetta if it’s running for France and not Netherlands.

regarding the Israeli choices:

Ahed’s Knee – Seen it. Loved it. Don’t think it will be the Israeli choice. Too political, and also, the movie is in theaters in Israel right now, and no one is coming to see it.

A movie to look out for – the very special Legend of Destruction

It is a movie in animation, only without any motion. the drawings (done by the same artist who drew Waltz with Bashir) do not move, but actors who give their voices and talent and an extensive soundtrack design make this unique film come alive. It is a historical drama, taking place in Jerusalem in the Year 66 AD.

This movie (trailer) is also on Israeli screens these days, and it is doing very well (considering the Covid situation). And it has the backing of Memento (link)
