He said unlike “The Piano”, he couldn’t get into any character or feel touched by the storylines. It’s like hearing a story safely told but that’s it. But TPOTD is still our best hope for BP atm! I’ll wait for the release and judge it by myself.

For MCU, I only love James Gunn’s and Taika Waititi’s works. I also appreciate how Marvel successfully put the characters together and made a milestone blockbuster, The Avengers (2012).
Other than these 4-5 projects, every other Marvel movie has the same situation for me: I had a very great time on first watch and thought they’re pretty well-done, but the aftertaste went downhill fast, aging like milk. I find them barely watchable whenever they’re played on TV. I disagree with the strong words from Mr. Scorsese that “they’re not cinema”, but I’m 100% with Denis Villeneuve on his remarks on Marvel movies.
I watched The Power of the Dog. It’s a poetic intimate psychological drama with beautiful direction. Cumberbatch and Dunst were simply breathtaking. I can see this film winning BP, directing, lead actor and supporting actress. Kirsten Dunst is put in supporting but she could have also been put in lead as she was more of a main character in the middle scenes. Lastly, I don’t see this winning adapted screenplay as this was more of a character drama than being plot oriented and recent winners have been plot oriented films.
would it kill them to vote for a popcorn flick that has both style and substance, and also good acting with a good storyline is all.
They do sometimes when they are good: “Black Panther”, “Mad Max: Fury Road” and this year “Dune”.
The last Marvel movie I really enjoyed was X2…so I’m glad someone (Denis) is finally taking a stand…

We’ll see how it all plays out, but these are the two films I see as having the best chance of winning right now.
I’m not considering this movie for a win, but I’m starting to wonder if Swan Song could be this year’s Her. It’s got a great release date and Apple could run a campaign for it if they don’t believe in CODA. I don’t see any reason why it couldn’t do something.

Oh c’mon you can enjoy Marvel movies and still admit they’re all mostly the same thing. There’s nothing elitist about that. Elitism is saying these movies don’t have a right to exist, which I don’t see anybody doing.
I love it that Feige is deserately trying to get respect for these movies yet even that one Picture nom couldn’t buy him that because they are mostly the same thing and not a very good same thing either. They are enjoyable in a fast food kind of way – you feel good while consuming it and don’t regret the purchase – but don’t leave a lasting impresison. The only reason why they aren’t forgotten is because there are too many sequels and team ups to remind that movies, that may have slipped off your mind, exist. But remove all that and none would stand the test of time.
