The only person in the lineup who was truly deserving was Florence Pugh and to an extent Margot Robbie. (I can see an argument for Scarlett Johansson too.) Zhao Shuzhen was snubbed big time.

This has become my church sermon for the day! Preach!!

Also, Park So-dam and Lee Jung-eun should’ve been nominated…and hell, Jang Hye-jin was far more worthy than any of the nominees.

    FYC:

Best Actor - Andrew Garfield, TICK TICK BOOM

Best Actress - Tessa Thompson, PASSING

I saw King Richard last night (in the cinema) and I and the audience with me loved every bit of it. People were laughing, wooing, and someone clapped during the scene when Ellis confronted the neighbor. Enjoyable is the best word for it.

Will Smith gave a masterful performance, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be an Oscar cake walk for him. The supporting cast was also very solid. Besides Smith, my favorite performance came from Bernthal. He’d be very worthy of a Supporting Actor nomination, but the field is so crowded this year I have doubts about his chances. Ellis was wonderful, but I personally preferred Sydney’s portrayal of Venus (although I’m pretty sure the Oscars will nominate the more seasoned Ellis).

King Richard is a well made, feel good, inspirational film — one of the better biopics in recent years and I think it’ll have strong legs at the Oscars, though it might be a little too “mainstream” win Best Picture.
