After seeing West Side Story tonight, I believe this film is coming for the top spots so be ready. I went into it with modest expectations but I see this playing very well with the academy, especially older voters that remember the original. It’s rare for a score to capture my attention, but something about the music in this film really adds to the viewing experience. I think Ziegler and DeBose are guaranteed nominees at this point, and Moreno could sneak in if the passion is there and those know her narrative. I hope this does well at the box office during the holidays because I think that will only strengthen its chances. Having seen both WSS and Belfast, I think I’d prefer WSS to win based all aspects of the film being phenomenal.

I’ll support any film other than Dog, Richard and Boom for best picture. I love Spielberg

    Anticipate "Hold My hand".

I’d be happy if Villeneuve wins. He deserves

Goldderby is letting it’s own taste cloud their judgement. Denis Villeneuve is totally cut from the same cloth this year as other Best Directing wins (Ang Lee for Life of Pi, James Cameron for Titanic, Peter Jackson for Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Alejandro Inarritu for The Revenant and so on and so forth). The people bringing up George Miller for Fury Road are grasping, Denis was nominated for Arrival and Dune is more AMPAS friendly with a bunch of actors they like, and will slay the Crafts.

Considering there are people who couldn’t even “decipher” that this is what the movie is (mainly/partly) about kind of proves the exact opposite.

src=”https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/13.1.0/svg/1f480.svg” class=”emoji” class=”emoji” class=”emoji” > Also, why does it have to be daring and new?

No, it just shows that people are not paying enough attention. It’s painfully obvious.

Because then it becomes tedious. If one Pays attention to the films various set-ups the ending doesn’t come as a surprise either

    FYC:
Best Picture: Licorice Pizza, West Side Story, Dune.

    Best Director: PTA, Denis Villeneuve

    Best Original Screenplay: Licorice Pizza.

This would be true if you’re looking at Cumberbatch’s role in isolation. I really think Smit-McPhee’s role does more for the story and the film. There’s a reason Campion reveals Phil’s sexuality early on. It’s not the main focus.

If that is the main reason, Campion hasn’t constructed her film very well. The main character is supposed to be interesting and awake the audiences curiosity. In that case they should have made Peter the main character and seen the story through his eyes.

    FYC:
Best Picture: Licorice Pizza, West Side Story, Dune.

    Best Director: PTA, Denis Villeneuve

    Best Original Screenplay: Licorice Pizza.

Yeah I really think TPOTD’s unique message and relatability will help it win BP.

What is the unique message that hasn’t seen the light of day before?

Dune is more AMPAS friendly than Fury Road? Are you insane? Prior to Fury Road, Miller received 3 Oscar nominations while Villeneuve only has 1 for Arrival. Fury Road features an academy award winning actress, Charlize Theron, as its lead. Dune has no Oscar winners in its lead characters. Fury Road has a 90 on Metacritic. Dune has a 74. Fury Road is a standalone. Dune is a unfinished part 1.

Dune has a stacked cast of Academy Award nominees, is based on an acclaimed classic sci-fi novel, is a technical marvel, is directed by a recent Best Director nominee and has that LOTR epic scope that is reminiscent of Old Hollywood epics. Fury Road was a feminist critique and a sequel to an older franchise.

You’ve got it wrong here. The thing about all of those films is they were very emotional and personal. They were clear directorial showcases, with strong viewpoints and expressionism, not just a high level of technical craftsmanship.

Dune won’t even be nominated for Director, because it falls into the “all head, no heart” category or the “it’s too commercial” category. This doesn’t feel like a singular directorial vision, in the vein of Mad Max: Fury Road. It feels like a very well-executed studio action film.

People know Dune 2 is coming and will have more meat on its bones in that part of the story. The directors branch will wait for that to recognize Villeneuve, if he delivers.

He is a total lock for Director and is win competitive. Life of Pi, The Revenant, Birdman, Gravity, and La La Land are all more technical than emotional.

Brittney doesn’t know shit about film, you picked a bad mentor. And that’s just completely wrong about those films you listed “not being emotional”.
