I watched “Flee” last night. Even though it’s a simple story without much footage, it’s an excellent documentary and I think it has a great chance of winning there. It gives a name and a relatable story to the refugees and asylum seekers in a way that I hope will stay with people. A critique some people might have is that it doesn’t explain much about the arrival of the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, because it focuses more on the personal than the political.

The style of the animation is rather simple, so I don’t think it will win animated feature, but it will be nominated for sure. The same for Best International Feature: I think that the Academy will go for “Drive My Car” or “The Worst Person in the World”.

At this stage I don’t buy the talk of DLU being as supported by the SAG+DGA to the point of being a possible winner.
Ruimy might very well be right, or he could just be leveraging playing both sides.

If sag likes DLU, I think the proof will be in the pudding. Ensemble is pretty near a lock, but I think in order for me to buy it as a top 5 contender I need DiCaprio to happen at SAG. In order for me to buy it as a #1 contender, it needs to go beyond those two.

    And DGA ain’t happening.

    My personal top ten:

    1. West Side Story
    2. Belfast
    3. Don’t Look Up
    4. The Lost Daughter
    5. The Power of the Dog
    6. The Hand of God
    7. Mass
    8. Encanto
    9. The Tragedy of Macbeth
    10. In the Heights

My current predictions for the BP lineup as of December 31st:

    1. West Side Story
    2. The Power of the Dog
    3. Belfast
    4. Dune
    5. King Richard
    6. Don’t Look Up
    7. Licorice Pizza
    8. The Tragedy of Macbeth
    9. CODA
    10. The Lost Daughter

Any of the first 3 can win the BP Oscar but I think the preferential ballot will tip it to WSS.

My personal top five for Best Director:

    1. Steven Spielberg, West Side Story
    2. Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Lost Daughter
    3. Kenneth Branagh, Belfast
    4. Adam McKay, Don’t Look Up
    5. Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog

My current predictions as of December 31st:

    1. Steven Spielberg, West Side Story
    2. Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog
    3. Kenneth Branagh, Belfast
    4. Adam McKay, Don’t Look Up
    5. Ryusuke Hamagushi, Drive My Car

I think people are totally underestimating Spielberg’s chances. I think Villeneuve and Anderson will both be left off the director’s branches nominees list.

    Personal top 10:
    1. Flee
    2. The Green knight
    4. Drive my car
    5. Petite maman
    8. Pig

    BP lineup

    10.Drivr my car

I haven’t seen any of those five films – Flee opens on Jan. 28 and Drive My Car opens on Jan. 14 – so excited to see them when they open!

I think Drive My Car may have trouble getting into the BP lineup for the simple reason that the voting bloc for foreign films may be split between it Parallel Mothers, The Hand of God, A Hero, Flee, and The Worst Person in the World. I have a feeling it’s critics wins will not translate into a nomination for BP but I see it making it in to International Film and Adapted Screenplay.
