Barry Jenkins thoughts on King Richard:
Will maybe say more later but… YES 🙌🏿
And, of course, AUNJANUE ELLIS. Caps for emphasis 👌🏿“
The Hidden Figures of the year that is socially relevant, crowdpleasing, inspiring, and powered through a strong ensemble. Best Picture nomination is safe.

So that critic was talking about Spencer as we here suspected.
“Is there a chance some critics are getting a little over excited about some of the movies playing at September festivals? Re one of the big movies that played Venice yesterday: near universal dislike among industry I’ve spoken to, but critics generally gushing.”

it was likely anything else yet screened in Venice. What next?September 4, 2021 at 9:37 am #1204436543King Richard and Belfast both feel like they’re going to be big crowd-pleasers, and they’re both combining that will early buzz from critics and festival audiences. I think both are looking pretty good for BP at the moment, which I have to say I wasn’t expecting, especially from King Richard which I thought would just be a Will Smith vehicle. I think Smith will take Actor with ease if it ends up in Picture, and even without that he seems to be getting the raves to make it possible, although Actors do tend to need a BP nod to be secure which is worth keeping in mind in the conversation around that category I guess.
September 4, 2021 at 10:11 am #1204436604The Lost Daughter is at 100% RT with 14 reviews
This one actually surprised me considering the reactions. We’ll see how it looks with more reviews coming in.

FYC:
Swinton, Weerasethakul Memoria, (Best Actress, Director)
Efira, Rampling, Wilson Benedetta (Best Actress, Supporting Actress/Actor)
Rapace Lamb (Best Actress)
Stewart, Hawkins, Spall Spencer (Best Actress, Supporting Actress/Actor)September 4, 2021 at 11:06 am #1204436712As much as I adored Spencer, awards prognosticators really need to put the brakes on: it's much less accessible than Jackie, and that hardly made a dent with the bigguns. K-Stew feels inevitable, as is entirely deserved, but again: it is *not* the film you think it is.

RE: Stewart is a lock, but I fear the film is really not that strong. It’s interesting because I thought Spencer got better reviews than Dune yesterday, but it seems like the opposite rn with Dune’s ratings rising and Spencer’s dwindling. I’m not a stan of any contender this year, so it’s interesting to observe how the reviews/prospects of one film can change over a short time (TPOTD, Hand of God, Lost Daughter, Dune, Belfast, etc.)
I enjoy this unpredictability!

September 4, 2021 at 11:10 am #1204436719It’s clear the industry/press member who warned us about a film’s audiences reception not being proportionate to the industry’s is Spencer. Stewart should get in but the film will most likely miss picture and other techs.

September 4, 2021 at 11:22 am #1204436734I think that Dune will start gaining a lot more power as the season continues.
It looks like it’s such an amazing cinematic experience that when it hits theaters audiences will hype it enough for BP and director nominations
