He could be Lucas Hedges – Manchester by the Sea, although that movie didn’t have another strong supporting actor contender. I think it’ll be harder for him with Plemons also here.

I think it might be harder for Plemons with Smit-McPhee there lol. Plemons has much more screentime and is somebody the Academy would probably like to nominate. But Smit-McPhee is 100% more important to the plot and a very mysterious character overall. The book closes on him actually, the film might too, that’s how important he is.

    FYC:
Picture: The Power of the Dog, Passing, The Lost Daughter
    Director: Jane Campion, Rebecca Hall
    Actor: Benedict Cumberbatch
    Actress: Tessa Thompson, Olivia Colman
Supporting Actress: Kirsten Dunst, Ruth Negga, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley
Supporting Actor: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jesse Plemons

Toni Servillo – The Hand of God (I have a good feeling about this one)

I also have a feeling he’s Supporting just based on the plot description, but everyone including the Oscar Expert seems to have him in Lead for some reason. Good call

Have to agree with you having taken a closer look. If it’s a “highly personal” film and seems to be making at least something of a plot point out the famous Maradona goal, when Sorrentino was 16, then I’d say almost certainly Filippo Scotti is the Lead. I could see Servillo being a co-lead maybe, but I think it’s more likely he has a supporting role as an older relative or something like that. Not a bad prediction at all if the film is successful.

He’s going Supporting for Tammy Faye so it won’t conflict with his Lead performance in Tick, Tick… Boom!.

I also agree that Leto could be in the conversation for HOG. But no one seems ready to have that conversation yet…

Leto is the biggest player. Transformative role = academy bait. Make up team covered up for his possible lack of acting.

Yep. if Tootache (Chastain in prosthetics) is predicted, so should be Leto in an easier to crack category. He checks all the boxes: transformation, showy, potential scene stealer.

Even if HOG is panned, Leto could still get in based on his transformation. It’s guaranteed a Hairstyling/Makeup nomination based on his performance alone.
