Camerimage main competition line up, one of the best precursors for Cinematography.

Titane and Passing are nominated in Directors Debut Competition.

The lack of The Power of the Dog is worrisome.

Time to nudge upward my personal odds of Elswit’s being Oscar-nominated for KR.

It’s not just for Cinematography, but also usually features movies with across the board nominations, mostly International Feature.

The Golden Frog winner has been nominated for either Cinematography or International Feature in the last 10 years.

    2019:
Joker (Golden Frog and Audience Award), Ford v Ferrari, The Two Popes (Silver Frog), The Irishman, Corpus Christi (International Feature nom), Honeyland (Documentary and International Feature)

    2018:
The Favourite (Audience Award), A Star is Born, Cold War (Silver Frog), Roma (Bronze Frog), First Man, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, At Eternity’s Gate, and some other foreign movies.

    2017:
The Last Man in Aleppo (Documentary), Body and Soul (Golden Frog winner and International Feature nom), Loveless (International Feature nom), Three Billboards (missed cinematography),

    2016:
Lion (Golden Frog winner), Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge (no cinematography but got in Director), Moonlight, Tanna (International Feature nom)

    2015:
The Look of Silence (Documentary), Carol (golden frog), Mad Max, Son of Saul (International Feature), Room, Sicario, Brooklyn

I mean, it’s not the end all or be all, but it’s certainly a reliable precursor.

Are people really expecting Dune to sweep the craft categories or do people just assume that’s what’ll happen with big budget sci fi?

What are your current predictions for VFX line-up? This is a category I struggle with, as I don’t watch many movies with special effects, so feel free to correct me.

    My predictions:

    Dune
    Spider-man: No Way Home
    The Matrix Resurrections
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
    Eternals

Well… imma let ya know a little secret. They HATE marvel lol. It WILL NOT get three movies in VFX mark my words. Even two is too much. Black Panther couldnt even get in and it was a frontrunner and a BP nominee. Dune is safe safe safe locked locked locked. Matrix Resurrections seems pretty safe as well. Eternals I think is in because it’s a “major” MCU movie (like avengers). Godzilla vs. Kong also seems in given Kong: Skull Island made it. Last slot I’m giving to Free Guy. I’ve seen it, and its vfx are great. Reminiscent of Ready Player One (yes, not as good, but still good).

Once there was only Dark. If you ask me, the Light's winning.

Nah. VFX, Sound, and probably Production Design, though honestly it doesn’t actually always go to impressive spectacles so it’s no slam dunk.

I’m biased towards Jonny Greenwood for Score & honestly Cinematography….way too competitive, so no I don’t think so for these. Editing, perhaps, but I can never really tell with this branch.

    FYC:
    Everything Everywhere All At Once
    The Banshees of Inisherin
    Women Talking
All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
    Joyland
    RRR
    Aftersun

It usually does when said spectacle is a Best Picture contender. World-building is a major factor in this category. It’s a competitive field this year, but I’m not sure what else could actually winNightmare Alley, perhaps?

I still think Dune is possibly being underestimated in Costumes. (Star Wars and Mad Max: Fury Road are the obvious points of comparison.) And honestly it looks like something that could scoop up Cinematography simply due to the scale and technical bravado of the whole thing. GD users might not like that very much, and I fully expect critics awards to lean elsewhere, but AMPAS has a different set of ideals for cinematography as we learned from Avatar and Hugo, for instance.
