Memoria seems like it could be a contender for Sound from the trailer.

Can you imagine? Black Widow, Dune, Eternals, The Last Duel, Memoria…? lol I’d love for that to happen since his films have deserved it before but his style is just at a totally different wavelength than what this branch even usually looks at, and I don’t think they’re the type of voters where Tilda’s presence alone can get it on their radar. In fact, in my own 2011 lineups going by Oscar qualifying runs I’d nominate both Uncle Boonmee and We Need to Talk About Kevin for Sound. 😛 I’d love to be proven wrong though.

Wishful thinking, probably, but you never know.

French Dispatch too, I’d say it has good odds across the board below the line.

Paramount sending a film like it to TIFF means they at least have faith in it being good, possibly great (Wonder at worst, Babe/Paddington at best) and the VFX branch have adored photorealistic CGI animals recently (Apes trilogy, Life of Pi, Guardians of the Galaxy, Jungle Book, Christopher Robin, Lion King, One and Only Ivan).

ReplyCopy URLAugust 1, 2021 at 7:11 am #1204374871Something interesting to note is that for the last six years in a row, only one Best Picture winner, 2017’s The Shape of Water, earned below the line technical wins to go along with its BP win. All other winners found themselves in the top spot because of the preferential ballot that was introduced in 2009. 2015: Spotlight (no tech wins, only won Original Screenplay) 2016: Moonlight (no tech wins, Adapted Screenplay + Supporting Actor) 2017: The Shape of Water (Production Design, Original Score + Director) 2018: Green Book (no tech wins, Original Screenplay + Supporting Actor) 2019: Parasite (no tech wins, Original Screenplay + Director) 2020: Nomadland (no tech wins, Director + Best Actress)
the only best picture winner that should’ve been swept the tech categories.
