French Dispatch in editing when the film won’t even come close to BP nom?

The French Dispatch is looking at a total shutout IMO. Too much competition in crafts/techs and it’s going nowhere above the line.

The French Dispatch could get in production design. I am doubtful about cinematography and score.

@wolfali do you know anything about the VFX-heaviness of Don’t Look Up? I’m not sure whether to predict it there because I have no clue how the whole situation will be visualized in the final product.

Edit: and yeah, of course TFD gets into Production Design. Like, that’s the easiest prediction of the year. It’s literally Stewart-in-Actress-level safe there

    FYC - Oscars 2022:
NINE DAYS in all categories, including:
    - Best Picture
    - Best Director
    - Best Original Screenplay
    - Best Actor (Winston Duke)
    - Best Supporting Actress (Zazie Beetz)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Benedict Wong)

    RIDERS OF JUSTICE:
    - Best Picture
    - Best Original Screenplay
    - Best Actor (Mads Mikkelsen)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Nicolas Bro)
    - Best International Feature

I don’t know. Competition is tough this year. We’ll have to see how the rest of the season plays off.

I have it in there purely as an assumption for now that there’ll be something large due to its premise.

Dune sweeps all. Question is only who also-runs are.

I don’t think it’s a shoe-in in Editing, Cinematography, Score, Costumes and Make-up and Hair, and I’d be tentative predicting it in Production Design. Sound I like its odd, but it could be beaten. Obviously it won’t win Song. Visual Effects is the only place I’d say confidently it’s going to win. I think with it probably not being a strong Picture contender unlike Gravity or a highly raved critical sensation like Mad Max it’s hard to be that bullish on its chances of a sweep right now, especially with a pretty stacked competition. I think it will win a few, but it isn’t a case of it dominating everything here and all other noms just being placeholders.

I agree about the wins, but it shouldn’t have too much of a problem getting into all these right? For wins, wolfali’s predix sound exactly right.

Also — even not getting into BP, The Hand of God‘s Fellini conceits are so obvious that it might sneak in for some techs.

Yeah I think Dune will get into most techs. I think it might miss editing and one or two others but it’ll probably be the nom leader in techs.

I think THOG will need to have some above the line presence outside of International Film to sneak techs. The Great Beauty was pure Fellini and extremely popular and still couldn’t get any tech nods. I think it has a pretty good shot at Cinematography, though.

Good point. But at that time Sorrentino was still pretty unknown. Now, after TGB, Youth, The Young Pope, The New Pope, at least Cinematography! Because if not…yeesh, you really whiffed it Sorrentino! Like…he’s well-known now! Also, Netflix is pretty good at getting tech nods for BP snubbees.

Based on the pictures, I think Don’t Look Up has a big chance at Production Design and Cinematography.
