I really think instead of having a Popular Film award, the Oscars should just be 75% academy members and 25% audience (at least with picture and performance awards) so that the nominees will truly be a mixed bag of critic faves and popular movies.

I just love movies. And awards.September 21, 2019 at 1:32 pm #1203091113
I would rather never watch a movie again than have the audience start pushing studio garbage further down the Oscar pipeline.
Sorry to be rude about it, but, yeah: if this is an excuse to get more billion dollar films into the BP lineup, along with their respective non-performances into the acting categories, no thanks.September 21, 2019 at 1:59 pm #1203091150
Let’s imagine how the 75% membership would feel….lol!September 21, 2019 at 2:04 pm #1203091158
Leonardo DiCaprio would have more Oscars and nominations then.
First thing that pops in mind.

What makes the Oscars prestigious is that they are a peer award, not a Harry from Hackensack award.September 21, 2019 at 3:04 pm #1203091219

Exactly. Oscars’ prestige comes from the fact that they are voted by the industry. General population voting for them just diminishes their reputation. Anyway, there already are multiple awards where people can award their faves.September 21, 2019 at 10:26 pm #1203091660
If this happens. All Marvel/Disney releases will win oscars..September 22, 2019 at 1:08 am #1203091810
I wish it was like this. Lady Gaga would have deservedly won best actress. I wouldn’t have wanted to see either Black Panther or Bohemian Rhapsody win best picture though
Taron Egerton (Rocketman) for best actor. Charlize Theron looks great in Bombshell teaserSeptember 22, 2019 at 1:18 am #1203091822
I don’t understand the hate towards superhero films. These are films with very big budgets that goes on to gross billions of Dollars. At the end of the day, film making is still a business and the investors expect profit in every project they invest in. The fact that these films are commercial giants shows that the audience truly cares.
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Even the Oscars is a business and that’s exactly why they’re seeking more viewers. Rewarding a film everyone got to see will surely give them more relevance than the popular tradition of rewarding obscure movies. They would have ended their game this year if they had awarded Roma. At least Green Book was a bit popular with the audience true it’s controversy and TIFF win. It also made over $300m worldwide. See how they failed to reward the amazing Avatar with a best picture win. Give the audience a little chance</p>
