For whatever other reason, some actors ended up being nominated in the wrong categories.
We already saw it with the actors of Judas and the black messiah (one of them awarded) and not to mention Viola Davis in Ma Rainey that some came to consider her as the future winner. Obviously it is neither the first nor the last time that this usually happens.
Some examples:
Anne Bancroft in Agnes of god
Geraldine Page in Interiors (He even won a Bafta for support)
Eleanor Parker in detective story
Alicia VIlkander in The Danish Girl (WINNER)
George Clooney in Syriana (WINNER)
Kevin Spacey in The usual suspects (WINNER)
Benicio del Toro in Traffic (He even won a SAG as a leader) (WINNER)
However, the most unusual thing was that of Patricia Neal by Hud because it ended up sweeping the awards season.
Have you ever wondered why that kind of thing usually happens?

I could go on and on about egregious category frauds but nothing compares to this one.

Meryl Streep was not the lead in The Devil Wears Prada, Viola Davis was not the lead in The Help, but Jennifer Hudson definitely was the lead in Dreamgirls.

I think you have exceptions there also.
In Ammonite,Kate Winslet is definitely the lead and Soairse Ronan supporting (borderline lead).ReplyCopy URLEmmy FYC

Um, which Dunst performance are you talking about? Because she didn’t have any movies in 2015.
You’re probably mistaking her with Kristen Stewart (Cloud of Sils Maria).ReplyCopy URLLetterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/IsabelaOlivie/

The studio fucked up so badly when they campaigned Another Round as a drama when it so obviously goes for a comedic tone for 90% of the runtime, ends with one of the most optimistic bangers of a scene in 2020 and would have made Mads Mikkelsen such an easy nominee in Actor which might just have cleared the path to an Oscar nomination. Criminal misjudgement.
