What were some situations where the awards body chose the WRONG supporting performance?
My thoughts:
Oscars: Scarlett Johansson over Thomasin McKenzie for Jojo Rabbit
Oscars: Octavia Spencer over Janelle Monáe for Hidden Figures
Oscars: Richard Jenkins over Michael Shannon for The Shape of Water
Oscars: Michael Shannon over Aaron Taylor-Johnson for Nocturnal Animals

April 24, 2020 at 12:36 am #1203444877I thought Michael Shannon is leading in Shape of Water than Supporting.
Kazan is forgettable in Big Sick.
Gladys Cooper over Wendy Hiller in Separate Tables

If anything, Ashton Sanders was the one who should’ve gotten the nom and win.
Richard Jenkins deserves his nomination but I do feel like Shannon should’ve been considered too. Yes, he was one-note but I still think he is incredibly compelling in the role. It was one of the most vile portrayals in recent years.
I do feel like Barbara Hershey deserves more recognition for her role in BLACK SWAN compared to the attention Mila Kunis got. For that matter, I also think Hershey should’ve shared the attention Dianne Wiest got for HANNAH AND HER SISTERS.
Marion Cotillard definitely deserved a nom over Cruz for NINE.
I feel like I’m drawing a blank. I feel like I can keep thinking of cases where an actor perhaps deserved to get a shared nomination but not a case where someone beat out a far more deserving person. I’m sure it’ll come to me randomly later today.

April 24, 2020 at 6:30 am #1203445174I was actually thinking of making a forum like this.
John Cazale should’ve been nominated for The Godfather Part II before Lee Strasberg Michael V. Gazzo.
Michael Keaton should’ve been nominated for Spotlight before Mark Ruffalo.
Thomasin McKenzie should’ve been nominated for Jojo Rabbit before Scarlett Johansson.
In a case of lead, while they’re pretty much neck and neck, I think I’d have chosen Tim Robbins before Morgan Freeman for The Shawshank Redemption.
John Cazale should’ve been nominated for Dog Day Afternoon before Chris Sarandon.
Janelle Monae was just as deserving as Octavia Spencer for Hidden Figures. I’m not sure if I’d have nominated her first, but if one got in, the other should’ve as well.
Diane Keaton should’ve been nominated before Talia Shire for The Godfather Part II.
ReplyCopy URLApril 24, 2020 at 6:46 am #1203445201Thomasin McKenzie for Jojo Rabitt should’ve get nominated If I have to pick between Scarlett and her i’ll choose Thomazin but I like them both un this movie

Janelle Monae Deserved that Oscar nomination Octavia was good but She was a Two time Oscar nominee and WINNER already so that third Oscar nod was foolish to me considering there were other deserving nominees out there than her again…April 24, 2020 at 6:53 am #1203445209She was nominated but should have won:
Jessica Chastain for The Help instead of Octavia Spencer.

April 24, 2020 at 8:49 am #1203445350I will agree with Barbara Hershey over Mila Kunis. Mila Kunis did nothing for me in Black Swan.
ReplyCopy URLApril 24, 2020 at 8:54 am #1203445364I thought ScarJo was pretty good in Jojo Rabbit so I will disagree with some of you there.
ReplyCopy URLApril 24, 2020 at 8:58 am #1203445373Will second Janelle over Octavia in Hidden Figures. Octavia was fine, but nothing nomination worthy, whereas I think Janelle and Taraji (different category I know) gave strong performances.

Absolutely this. Thomasin role was Bargain Bin Anna Frank. Nothing special. It’s not a bad performance or anything just the role was blah. Scarlett’s role was both sassy and moving, much more to do and defitneily much more memorable.
