I totally agree with those saying Slumdog Millionaire didn’t deserve eight Oscars. That year was a great year for cinema, but a terrible one for the Academy. Rarely seen such a huge (!!!) gap between the best films of a given year and its eventual Best Picture nominees.

Another film I have to mention is From Here to Eternity. No way it deserves eight Oscars! Looking back I honestly do not know what the Academy was thinking. Ok, the acting was decent, but that’s about it really.

And Gravity should have won Best Picture over 12 Years a Slave, although 2013 had one of the better winners in recent years.

See I liked Nashville but hated Tree of Life. But I can see where someone would watch Nashville and intensely dislike it.

Nashville is an extraordinary film. As time passes, I find that Robert Altman’s complex structure and overlapping dialogue provides undiscovered and fascinating insights each time I screen the Best Picture nominee again. I met the talented Ronee Blakely recently. She is a kind woman with fascinating stories to share about the making of the legendary film.

Blakely richly deserved the acclaim she received for her heartbreaking performance as emotionally fragile country music star Barbara Jean. I have always thought had Blakely been nominated as lead actress instead of supporting that both she would have won. Without Blakely there to split the supporting actress vote, Lily Tomlin as adulterous gospel singer Linnea Reese would definitely have won as well.

    Yes!  And, …..yes and yes!

That entire cast is sublime. I LOVE how, among many other aspects of the film, Karen Black doesnt know who Julie Christie is. Lol. It’s an insular world. I can relate to that.
