Glenn Close in The Wife. Shouldn’t have even been nominated. I’d even rate Gaga’s perfectly “meh” performance before Close’s mediocre attempt. The way she desperately tried to ride that overdue narrative like her life depended on it… I HAVE TO LAUGH. She even wore gold! *Insert Nicki Minaj evil laugh gif*

Gary Oldman in a fat suit hamming it to the hilt in The Darkest Hours; Frances McDormand playing a role she has played over and over again except this time without lots of colourful language in Three Billboards…..; Margo Robbie & Allison Janney (wasted) in one-note broad work in I. Tonya; Kevin Spacey & Annette Benning (see I, Tonya) in American Beauty.

OMG this. Tired of these excessive performances. Yes, sometimes the acting has to be flashy because the part or the style/tone of the movie requires it but very few actually manage not to cross the line into overacting and seem natural. Meanwhile subtle performances are discarded even though they can be as hard to pull off as the showier ones. Sometimes even tougher because all the focus is on the actor and he doesn’t get to hide behind lots of screaming, prosthetics and make up.

And it’s annoying when people start crediting/praising the actor for resembling the real life character they are playing, when it’s the make-up team that should actually be lauded. Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill and Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly are the most prominent examples in recent times.

Sam Ratwell in Three Billboards. I know his Oscar win is widely panned here, but I still think he’s overrated because that cretin still occasionally gets “no, he wasn’t THAT bad” shoutouts here. He was. He is the worst Oscar winning performance this decade to me. At least Rami Malek attempted to play a facsimile of a person. At least Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything attempted to perform a role, even if he didn’t succeed. God, even that worthless creep Jared Leto made me feel less like the entirety of acting as a concept was worthless than that rat did.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen such vitriol towards a performance. Are you mad that Dafoe lost, or is he really that bad? (I’m genuinely asking since I haven’t seen Three Billboards)

Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich. Compared to Ellen Burstyn and Laura Linney she did

Laughs. I feel Brockovich is her best nominated performance.

I preferred Marg Helgenberger. She moved me. I was choked when they ignored her.

Both. I will admit, nobody could have made that role good. But Sam Rockwell definitely made it worse. Even basic sentence reads don’t feel like either a character or a performance. And I don’t think Three Billboards is one of the worst movies ever, just that Sam Rockwell is proof that any crap can get elevated to Oscar status with the right campaign. He is as much a symbol of malignance as Crash winning Best Picture.

What is your point? You’ve basically been saying everyone that doesn’t suck Joaquin’s dick is a delusional moron who is ruining the discourse. I haven’t even said he isn’t winning! I just think with Adam Driver vs Joaquin as a matchup, we need to get results from critics and industry awards before we automatically default to assuming that there’s a lock. Joaquin has many factors going against him, which could be overcome. However, bringing up these factors makes you react like someone saying “I hate America” at a GOP meeting.

I’d just like to step in and say that while Cordelia is completely entitled to their opinion, I completely disagree. I think Sam Rockwell was the second best Supporting Actor winner of this decade behind JK Simmons. I think he did a wonderful job portraying a damaged and unlikable man who nevertheless shows depth behind all of his bravado, and ultimately has a chance of making himself better, nailing both the drama and comedy.

Also, I can’t help but think Cordelia is projecting their feelings onto the rest of this site just a bit, as I don’t recall Rockwell’s performance ever getting enough hate on here to be called panned. He even won at the GoldDerby Awards. The only person I recall hating Rockwell’s performance as much as Cordelia apparently does was Teridax who voted for Rockwell at the Razzies, despite the fact that he was ineligible there. And even then, Teridax ended up pulling a 180 and started heaping praise on Rockwell and the rest of the film. As a fan of Three Billboards, I suggest checking it out and deciding for yourself what to think of it.

Rockwell definitely did deserve that win.

Just because it was her best nominated performance doesn’t mean she was the best in her category. Ellen Burstyn acted circles around her and should have been the winner. Not only was her performance the best of the Year (male or female) but it’s one of the best performances of the century/millennium.

FYC Emmys: Helena Bonham Carter (Drama Supporting Actress), Olivia Colman (Drama Actress), Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh (Drama Actress), Fiona Shaw (Drama Supporting Actress), Zendaya (Drama Actress), Alexis Bledel (Drama Guest Actress)
