In the ending scene where Mr. Kim stabbed Mr. Park, the general concensus is that he disgusted Mr. Park’s disgust toward the poor. But I think it is together with the fact that he knew Mr. Park had an affair with his daughter that caused the last straw for him. Let me link all the clues:
1. The action when Mrs. Park held Mr. Kim’s hand upon finding out that her then current servant had pneumonophthisis, he thought that she was a good person (well in fact, that holding hand could mean she was just begging him to keep secret because she is a naive person). Mr. Kim has been keeping this thought all along, and when his daughter brought up that rich woman is a stupid bitch (in her actual words), he argued her daughter and told her that she was indeed a generous person. That’s why during the car conversation of Mr. Park and Mr. Kim, when he was just talking bad things about his wife and doesn’t seem enthusiastic about the relationship, Mr. Kim doubted his royalty to his wife and kept bringing up the question “Do you really love her?” because he thought why would his boss cheat on a good woman like that. That was the first instinct.
2. During the scene when Mr. Kim’s daughter was enjoying herself in the bathtub, her brother asked her why she was feeling comfortable like at home. The answer is because she was indeed in there several times before, and Mr. Kim overheard that conversation.
3. Again at the poor family’s dinner scene, that daughter kept bringing up that the rich housewife was a stupid bitch. Of all the four members of the rich family, she kept singling out the stupidity of Mrs. Park. That was because she was indeed having an affair with Mr. Park, and his wife couldn’t even find out.
4. During the sex scene of Mr. Park’s couple, he joked that it would turn him on even more if his wife was wearing that cheap panties he found in the car. That cheap panties belong to the daughter of the poor family.
5. In the last scene where the two men are secretly discussing the plan of surprising his son, he told the poor man they could be the villains together, while the daughter of the poor family (whom he didn’t know was the daughter of the man he was talking to) could be the victim and and his son could be the hero to save her. It was not his wife’s plan at all, but in fact his plan so that he could sexually touch her without any doubt. When Mr. Kim asked him if his wife really came up with this idea and if he truly loved his wife, again, Mr. Park thought he couldn’t hold it anymore and accidentally spit out “I will raise your salary if you keep this as a work secret”. Notice Mr. Kim’s facial expression. That way, Mr. Kim truly figured out that the man was indeed having sex with his daughter. And all that broke out during everything happened during the party chaos sequence.
That was my idea about one small detail in this film that the director was trying to sneak in. Believe me but there are wayyyy more metaphors and foreshadowings in this movie that even Jordan Peele couldn’t dream of.

I’ve seen the film twice and it never crossed my mind but there are so many metaphors within the film. A second viewing also outlined to me how many hints Bong gives about so many things that play out later but during a first viewing I was so engrossed in the unfolding events that I didn’t pick a lot of them.
I’ll certainly take your perceptions in mind next time I watch the film, which won’t be until its home video release…..but its still playing at my local cinema so I might give it a third go (needles to say a thought very highly of the film).

1. Their trying to catch wifi is the very first representation of “parasite”.
2. The family was being sprayed on by insecticides, which the author indicate they were “parasites”. Notice the concentration on the father, he is the true dumb and stupid parasite, the other 3 are at least cunning in some ways.
3. 1/4 of the pizza boxes were ruined, which represent a family member had to die, which was the daughter.
4. The insanely high staircases or hillways, purposedly shot by camera, is the poverty gap.
5. The mentions of Indian American (who tried to guard their homeland) through out the film, and the arrows being shot into the poor guy when he first came, indicate “parasite needs to stay off the host”
6. The drawing portray that the rich mother thought was her son’s self-portrait was the foreshadowing that someone else was living inside and her son saw him and was obsessed with that and became mentally ill. Notice the yellow arrow at the corner of the painting meaning “going up the stairs”.
7. Their crawling to escape from the rich house resembles a cockroach trying to crawl. The sight and the mentions of cockroaches were throughout the movie, and they were a kind of parasite.
8. Their running away, all wet in the rain resembles sewage mouse trying to run away from being found out by humans, a kind of host to them.
9. The daughter sitting on the toilet peacefully and smoking while the two other men were rushingly trying to sneak out all the precious things from the flood indicates that she will easily accept her fate of death.
10. Also the rain is a metaphor which clears off all the pretentiousness and scams. It led to the rich family to rush home to find out about the parasite family. It flooded the poor family’s home, forcing them to go outside, trying to show how poor and uncivilized they truly are.
11. The Kim family and the ex-servant’s couple were all resembling “parasites” in the way they tried to fight with each other to get the most “nutrients” from the “the host”.
12. The rich family is a typical cliche rich family: cheating husband, dumb wife, autistic little brother and horny and naive high school sister.
13. The rock is also a kind of parasite: trying to stick with the son of the poor family the whole time, causing a lot of trouble for the host, never leave its host when he was unaware.
14. Also the window views of the two families: the poor ones viewed to dirt, smell and darkness; while the rich ones viewed to sunshine and warmness.
15. A detail that I really wondered is Mr. Kim once said that he was fired from a Taiwanese restaurant. The servant’s husband said he owned a Taiwanese restaurant but he went bankrupt and into debt, resulting in his hiding away and insanity. Which means Mr. Kim may have worked at his restaurant before, but ignored someone who may be his boss. Which means parasites always care about themselves trying to get as much as possible from the host without thinking about parasites.
16. The basement represented something even worse than a prison that Mr. Kim had to pay for all the bad things he had done.
17. Also the poor, no internet parasite represents the North Korea, Mr. Kim. The rich, prosperious host represents South Korea, Mr. Park (its current president).

The quoted dialogs that you pointed out aren’t the same dialogs as in the movie. Though I am not Korean myself (I consider myself as an intermediate Korean learner), I assure you that those aren’t the same things that the characters said. Most specially the “I will raise your salary if you keep this as a work secret.” This was never said in the movie. Mr. Park said that he is paid extra for a personal driver, which is why he wants Mr. Kim not to “cross the line” or get into something personal with him.
Mr. Park consider his “married life” or “love life” as something personal. As we all (would) do, and he doesn’t want to get into conversation with that personal topic with someone like Mr. Kim because he thinks that Mr. Kim is not his family or not on the same level as him.
ReplyCopy URLIt’s in an interesting idea, but I’m sure that the reason Mr Kim kills Mr Park is because of the way Mr Park looks down on the poor. Even if you’re right, Mr Kim isn’t at all aggressive the entire sequence towards the Park family and obeys Mr Park’s instructions, but when Mr Park reviles at the stench of the ex-housekeeper’s husband, Mr Kim then makes the decision at that moment to take the knife and kill Mr Park.

Also, the reason the brother mentions his sisters’ ability to “fit in” in the home is to show that many poor people suffer extreme imposter syndrome, even when their status is elevated, however the sister is not affected by this. Making this moment about an affair instead of poverty seriously undermines the point of this film. Likewise, Mr. Kim killing Mr. Park for any reason other than observing Mr. Park’s treatment of the poor undermines the point of the film, which is an examination of class. A lot of your ideas on the imagery–the family crawling out from under the table–are spot on. But there’s certainly no affair in this story.
