Shirley MacLaine was the studio’s choice for FUNNY GIRL!!! Producers insisted on Barbra Streisand. Odd to think that even though she had not made a film yet they would want someone else. Streisand was a huge music, TV & stage star at this point.

Side trivia, a bio of Fanny Brice had been first considered in the early 50’s with Mary Martin in it. Martin suggested it should be a stage musical and all agreed, but most thought Martin was too WASPY for the role.

Slightly off topic more side trivia. The stage musical idea when resurrected years later was first given to Anne Bancroft. She was hesitant about singing the score. The score was adjusted to her singing abilities. Bancroft however did not like lyricist Bob Merrill personally and backed out. Eydie Gorme & Carol Burnett were also offered. Gorme said Steve Lawrence had to be in it and Burnett turned them down saying Brice needed to be played by someone Jewish.

1st choice Bette Davis & 2nd choice Barbara Stanwyck both turned down MILDRED PIERCE because of other work. Afterwards Michael Curtiz campaigned for either Olivia de Havilland or Joan Fontaine. Not sure if either were ever offered. Rosalind Russell & Ann Sheridan also turned the role down before Joan Crawford got her mits on it.

Julianne Moore was originally the lead in Can You Ever Forgive Me? but left over creative differences and Melissa McCarthy took over. Mae West and Mary Pickford famously declined the lead in Sunset Boulevard which originally had Montgomery Clift in the William Holden role.

Claudette Colbert had to withdraw from All About Eve after a skiing accident which gave the role to Bette Davis.

Thanks interesting and it could have been Mary Steenburgen. I think originally Jennifer Jones owned the property which then ended up in the hands of James L. Brooks. Brooks wanted to cast Elizabeth Taylor but she declined and that is when Shirley MacLaine stepped in and didn’t work for a couple of years because she wanted to ensure she played the role. Spacek was also cast as her daughter because they really do look like mother and daughter. By the time production started Spacek dropped out because she had recently had a baby and wanted to spend time devoted to motherhood. I know Mary Steenburgen was offered according to one of Shirley MacLaine’s books but I have no idea why she declined. Anyway, that is how Winger ended up with the role.

Steenburgen has Cross Creek released in the same year as Terms of Endearment. That maybe the reason.

Natalie Wood decline the lead role in Bonnie & Clyde. I read that Warren Beatty offered to her twice but she declined. Ann-Margret and Tuesday Weld both also declined. Jane Fonda also auditioned for the role (she was pissed she didn’t get the part) but eventually they cast Faye Dunaway.

Anne Bancroft & Louise Fletcher were also considered for Aurora. I always thought a Bancroft/Winger or MacLaine/Spacek combo would look more like a mother & daughter. I’ve come across mentions of Jodie Foster & singer Chrissie Hynde as well in the running for Emma. Not sure if more than Reynolds has been mentioned for Garret, but supposedly Harrison Ford, James Garner & Paul Newman all turned that role down.

Burt Reynolds always said that he turned down Terms because he was already committed to Stroker Ace. I’m not sure I believe that. I think he may not have been ready to give up his heartthrob status and play a paunchy middle age guy. The role of Garrett is actually pretty small. They could have flown him in from the Stroker Ace set on weekends or something if he really wanted to do it.

I do believe Reynolds was first choice. James L. Brooks was one of the producers of Starting Over (1979) which was one of Reynolds most acclaimed performances so they did have a previous working relationship.

Jennifer Hudson turned down the lead role in the A Star is Born remake (when Clint Eastwood was still attached to direct), shortly after she won her Oscar.

She was also offered the lead in Harriet, but chose to do Cats instead.

The fact that she turned down leads in ASIB, Harriet, and Precious…. makes me question her judgment in film choices lol

According to Paul Verhoeven, lots of American actresses turned down the female lead role in Elle. My question is if Tilda Swinton, Irish or Cate Blanchett, Australian were considered or asked?

Maybe she just feels more comfortable in musicals.

I just know emma watson turned down la la land. Emma Roberts was first choice of Harley Quinn that could have a key role in her career maybe. Can say also that Brandon Lee in 1993 the year of his death , when he was alive refused to play his father in ”Dragon : The Bruce Lee Story” that was played by Jason Scott Lee, and Brandon was the first choice to play Neo in the matrix triology.

Imagine. La La Land would’ve won four Oscars at best, and Isabelle Huppert would’ve won too.

Can you imagine Angela Lansbury as Nurse Ratched? That would have been thrilling.
