If Winslet had been in Supporting for The Reader it is interesting to think of the domino effect that would have happened.

She’d have won there and Streep probably would have won lead for Doubt. So then Viola Davis would have beat Streep for The Help. So then with Fences Davis would probably have gone lead and Michelle Williams would have won supporting.

I think Hathaway would have pulled it off there. Streep is good in Doubt and so is the film but I never got the impression the Academy really loved it. Sure they hated Rachel Getting Married but the industry could have rallied around Hathaway. Or maybe Winslet would have won two Oscars. Or Melissa Leo would have shocked everybody.

Winslet is definitely a lead in The Reader. She is the center of the film. She is not THE lead but she is hands down a lead.

The Carol situation was really odd to me as well as Vikander being put in supporting. Category fraud had gotten worse over time but I was sure that at least ONE of them would be put in lead. Vikander would have been the best bet as it seems as if Mara being in supporting was baked in at that point even though she is definitely not supporting.

I think people miss that Meryl’s win for The Iron Lady was definitely propelled by her losing her last three(arguably four since she had a shot for Adaptation) races. She had no chance for The Devil Wears Prada but there was empty buzz about her chances because the role was so immediately iconic. She definitely surpassed Dench as Mirren’s very very distant runner up. And then Doubt and Julie & Julia helped cement the whole “Give her a third Oscar now period”(this is a quote from an old Oscar blogger that is sadly not blogging anymore, a pity). I don’t think that we can say that Streep easily would have won for any of those three(or four?) films. Margaret Thatcher is also a very juicy role. It has Oscar written all over it more so than Doubt, The Devil Wears Prada, and Julie & Julia.

One person that always comes to mind is Michelle Pfeiffer for The Fabulous Baker Boys. The movie was named for the Bridges brothers characters. She supported them. At the point in her career her star was just growing so she could have gotten away with it. She was never beating Tandy no matter how many critics awards she won. And supporting actress was bare bones that year. The Globe was won by the 4th best performance in Steel Magnolias and the Oscar by the unknown Irish actress who would go on to be Home Alone’s bird lady.

1974 Academy Awards Best supporting actress
Tatum O’neil could have gone lead instead of supp as she should have being the lead in her movie and let Linda Blair win supp for The Exorcist

Thank God she didn’t. Blair had no business near the Oscar. The performance was all effects, makeup, and voice over. Which is why her career went on and she made nothing but bad movies and gave razzie worthy performances.

If O’Neal went lead I think either Sidney or Kahn would have won supporting that year.

Streep did win SAG though so I think that would have carried her to the Oscar win too.

Having rewatched Chinatown this weekend, I think Dunaway in supporting would have been really odd!

I saw Doubt and I did not think that Streep was Oscar worthy. I wonder if Streep won for Doubt, then how would Streep winning for Doubt would compare to the Iron Lady

I always think how unfair it is that Tatum O’Neal went supporting for Paper Moon when she was clearly the lead. That award should have gone to her co-star Madeline Kahn, who was brilliant in that film and never got to win an Oscar.

Viola Davis would’ve swept for The Help over Octavia Spencer. She would probably be a 2 time Oscar winner by now.

Dear Gold Derby, please add Ibrahima Gueye to the prediction center 🙂

She would have been a Best Actress winner by now…also her performance in Fences is lead

Maybe I’ll have to go back and rewatch it, but I remembered when I first watched it, I knew she and Nicholson were nominated, but not here category, so I just assumed she was up for Supporting Actress. Maybe she’s a lead, but I’m pretty sure that Nicholson was in every single scene, which she was most definitely not. If she’s a lead, then she’s very, very, very secondary to him.

Louise Fletcher won as lead. Never understood that.
