Well, we saw how this worked out for Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal.

Louise Fletcher won as lead. Never understood that.

That was the year that there were so few potential Best Actress nominees that some people felt they should eliminate the category. I guess the producers saw an opportunity and put her in lead and it worked.

The Academy actually did a good job finding some off beat and small films to nominate for Best Actress since there were none to really chose from in the big main stream films.

She’s the protagonist and hero. I think the main reason she was in lead and Macy was in supporting was because he’s one of the villains. I’d have put him in lead, which would’ve given Steve Buscemi a better shot in supporting where he would’ve been a great nominee.

I’m not entirely sure, but Morgan Freeman in Shawshank might‘ve given Martin Landau a fight if he was frauded into Supporting Actor.

On the topic of Shawshank Redemption, Tim Robbins’ snub in Best Actor that year is absolutely ridiculous. He was perfection in that film.

An odd category fraud (don’t think it was her idea) is Rosanna Arquette winning Best Supporting Actress BAFTA for Desperately Seeking Susan. She was clearly the lead.

BAFTAs used to be odd back then. Lots of strange wins. (I miss that!)

Maybe they thought Madonna would happen as lead actress? It was before her string of flops.

If this were to happen I think Cruz would be replaced by Hudson and this would give Kate a chance to build on the oscar win she deserved for Almost Famous

BAFTA also had Anne Hathaway as supporting for The Devil wears Prada on their shortlist. Seems like they do not watch the movies they nominate.

It DEFINITELY would have been an egregious fraud, but I think Rosamund Pike could have gotten away with running supporting for Gone Girl, and she would have had a much better shot at the win there. The Academy obviously didn’t love the film overall, so maybe not, but I think that if the Globes had started a good run for her, she could have continued a streak all the way to that Oscar stage. Arquette would have been easier to beat than Moore at least.

They tried to do that but the Academy didn’t nominate him.
