Not exactly “weirdly unrecognized”, but Vicky Krieps was the heart, soul, and body of Phantom ThreadMay 3, 2021 at 8:00 pm #1204241583
I still don’t get how John David Washington didn’t get in for BlacKkKlansman. He was the star of the movie. He should have replaced Rami Malek.
Movie-lover overall.May 3, 2021 at 10:48 pm #1204241696
Not really weird since it’s only competitive in Best International Film, but Jasna Djuricic in Quo Vadis Aida could wash most of the Best Actress nominees this year.
Also Andrew Garfield in Silence. I really think it’s a superior performance than Hacksaw Ridge. But the movie sadly flopped.May 3, 2021 at 10:57 pm #1204241706
I know they all got nominated pretty much everywhere, but it was weird that The Shape of Water’s cast couldn’t win a single televised award. And the SAG ensemble miss remains baffling.
I liked 3BB more overall but Hawkins and Jenkins deserved better.May 4, 2021 at 7:36 am #1204242106
I’m gonna say Samantha Barks in Les Miserables, and I remberer her being really goodMay 4, 2021 at 11:39 am #1204242393

it was also odd that Michael Shannon, who was excellent, got no attention. This was even after he got a random nomination the year before for Nocturnal Animals, so he should have been on the minds of the academy anyway.May 4, 2021 at 1:04 pm #1204242496
Richard Gere in Chicago
I used to hate it when I would comment on how great an actor’s performance was in a film and my parents would say, “but you should have seen [so and so] on stage— [he or she] was even better in that role.” BUT, here I go— having seen them both, Richard Gere was great in the movie, Chicago, but I thought Jerry Orbach was even better as Billy Flynn in the Broadway version.May 4, 2021 at 9:09 pm #1204243015

Anne Hathaway really sucked up all the supporting actress oxygen for that movie, but I think she was also hurt by Hooper totally fucking up her big number. I mean it’s one of the most famous songs in the show and he directed it so strangely!May 4, 2021 at 9:11 pm #1204243017

Many didn’t make BP so I suppose that’s telling, but they hit somewhere or the other.
—Mia Farrow, Rosemary’s Baby & Hannah and Her Sisters
—Barbara Hershey, Hannah and Her Sisters
—Vicky Krieps, Phantom Thread
—Amy Adams, Arrival
—Kirsten Dunst, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, also I think she freaking nails her white-complicity character in Hidden Figures. Octavia’s scenes with Dunst got her the nod, but Dunst went toe-to-toe with her and those were the best and most nuanced parts of the entire film.
—Kathleen Turner, The Virgin Suicides
—Michael B. Jordan, Creed & Fruitvale Station
—Kiki Layne & Stephan James, If Beale Street Could Talk
—Annette Bening, 20th Century Women
—Anne Hathaway, Brokeback Mountain
—Rosemarie DeWitt, Rachel Getting Married
—Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada
—Allison Williams & Betty Gabriel, Get Out
—Joel Edgerton, Loving
—Winona Ryder, Girl Interrupted
—Jena Malone, Pride & Prejudice
—Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road
—Emily Watson, War Horse
—Paul Dano, There Will Be Blood
—Angela Bassett, Malcolm X
—Meryl Streep, The Hours
—Julianne Nicholson & Juliette Lewis, August: Osage County
—Sandra Oh, Sideways
—Christina Ricci, Monster
—Carey Mulligan, Shame
—Regina King, Ray
—Tilda Swinton, I am Love
—Paymaan Maadi, A Separation
—Laura Linney, The Truman Show
—James McAvoy, Atonement
—Glenn Close, Reversal of Fortune
—Charlize Theron, Mad Max: Fury Road
—Song Kang-ho, Parasite
—Michelle Yeoh, Crazy Rich Asians & Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
—Ashton Sanders, Moonlight
—Ethan Hawke, First Reformed
—Evan Rachel Wood, Thirteen & Across the UniverseMay 6, 2021 at 12:22 am #1204244375

Anne Hathaway was amazing in that movie, but I always thought of Barks being the heart of that movie. I feel bad for saying this because Barks would have done a better job then any of them. But I feel like if a bigger star got that part. They could have easily gotten a nomination. Its a shame because Samantha Barks was so good. Hooper did wacky things with that movie in general
