That was A Beautiful Mind that beat Moulin Rouge! for the Oscar in 2001, not Gladiator.

The Aviator should have won at least Directing, i’ve no understanding how Eastwood won in that category.

    DGA/Oscars:

1968: Anthony Harvey < Carol Reed
1972: Coppola=Fosse (I honestly think both did masterful jobs)
1985: Spielberg < Pollack (though neither were that worthy…of the nominees I would’ve gone with Weir or Babenco)
1995: Howard < Gibson (though not wild about either…probably would’ve opted for Lee at DGA and Noonan at the Oscars. That was such an odd year)
2000: Lee < Soderbergh (though Lee was worthy)
2012: Affleck > Lee (also the year they snubbed Bigelow at the Oscars. Would’ve voted for Haneke)
2019: Mendes < Bong (Mendes did a good job but PARASITE was a masterclass)

    PGA/Oscars:

1992: The Crying Game > Unforgiven
1995: Apollo 13 > Braveheart (don’t like the former and HATE the latter. Of the nominees, SENSE gets my vote)
1998: Saving Private Ryan > Shakespeare in Love
    2001: Moulin Rouge! > A Beautiful Mind
2004: The Aviator > Million Dollar Baby
2005: Brokeback Mountain > Crash (is that even a contest though)
2006: Little Miss Sunshine > The Departed
2015: The Big Short > Spotlight
2016: La La Land < Moonlight
    2019: 1917 < Parasite
