The Power of the Dog placing in top 3 would bode well for its above the line winning prospects.

Bodes well for Belfast and TPOTD regardless of who wins out of the three. Belfast needs to be a big crowd-pleaser, and for TPOTD this dispels the idea that the film will be too inaccessible for audiences which I’ve seen some pundits float around recently. Both should do pretty well if they can resonate with audiences and placing in the Top 3 here, despite limited competition, boosts them above the line a good deal.

It’s kind of a huge deal TPOTD placed at all—whether as a runner-up or winner it almost doesn’t matter!

Justice for Passing, Tessa Thompson & Ruth Negga.

The Power of the Dog / Jane Campion / Benedict Cumberbatch / Kristen Stewart / Kirsten Dunst / Troy Kotsur

TPOTD placing in the top 3 is incredible considering The Shape of Water failed to place in the top 3 at all.

But ouch The Humans not placing at all probably puts it out of contention for Picture.
