Not necessarily disagreeing with you, but with Deadpool, Wonder Woman, A Quiet Place, and Crazy Rich Asians (mentioning these for closeness, not quality) all getting PGA nominations recently, the distinction doesn’t seem as close as it might otherwise.

Y’all…I promise you that these studios do not need you to come onto Jeff Bezos’ internet and defend their films from cinema critics. The solution to misogyny is not creating more female superheroes with a background in the armed services and then paying billions of dollars to see them destroy a new city around the globe.

We know that the studios pander to both the liberal bastardization of identity politics *and* the phenomenon of male fan-ownership of these comic/tentpole properties. Both of these camps will thus naturally balk at any sort of criticism, especially from the “professional class,” because they see it as a personal attack. Kyle Smith isn’t attacking you or your children lol, he’s recognizing that, finally, the critical class managing to judge a massive studio picture in the negative, despite most of their kind having been sold out to the studio dollar long ago.

I said that it “almost” got a Best Picture nomination, which I would also say about each of those.  The Oscars tend to nominate eight of the PGA nominees, so the remaining two each year are the ones that almost made it.
