Watched this and I absolutely loved it. I had a couple issues with it, but I loved how upfront with the themes and messages it wanted to convey it was. The performances were great, the script was great. No idea what to think of the end yet, probably will have to watch it again. I glad that this film makes people uncomfortable because that’s how you should feel watching a movie about this topic. It not only discusses the people who are enabled by rape culture (men), but the people that help them (friends, Madison who didn’t believe Nina), the institution’s that enable them (the school doing nothing), and also the people that do nothing, like Cassie’s BF (who’s name I can’t remember). When he says that he “didn’t do anything”, that’s the point. He didn’t do anything to stop it. This film is excellent at putting its message across.

Best Screenplay: Never Rarely Sometimes Always (Eliza Hitman)
Best Actress: Sidney Flanigan ("Never Rarely Sometimes Always")January 15, 2021 at 10:40 pm #1203986027I’ve now got Emerald getting in director at the Oscars. She’ll likely win dga first feature and maybe win at wga a la eighth grade.
At first I thought all the noise was just because the film is the most accessible to general audiences out of the main contenders, but now I see significant critic support for her too not just Carey
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 15, 2021 at 11:59 pm #1203986049That is “Pretty Fly” from the 1955 classic “Night of the Hunter”, which is not about rape but still about the innocent “hunted” by the evil. I don’t think they chose this film randomly (you can even see a clip of it shown in PYW). They knew it has the similar message to PYW.
Tried to get it in Spotify but it’s mostly Pretty Fly for a White Guy. Lol.
Anyway, the more days pass, the more I like this film. I don’t even really mind the ending so much anymore.
ReplyCopy URLI just love movies. And awards.
January 16, 2021 at 8:01 am #1203986382No movie from this past year has stayed with me as much as this one. Having not seen Nomadland yet, I really hope Carey can pull off a win for this!

It’s having the exact same effect on me, it literally blew my mind!
I admit being very critical about Mulligan until now, based on her past performances but to me she got to a whole new level and is my fav lead female performance since Frances’ second win.

Thought the subject matter is anything but funny, I’d classify this as a very dark comedy, for the very most part. I’ll reserve the rest of my comments for my review, which I’ll post later, once I’ve processed everything.

I’m sorry if it’s been asked before, but when is this movie going to be released in a streaming platform? I live in Argentina and my platform choices are more limited I guess.

… just maybeTea. Emma Stone is one of the worst winners. Won for doing nothing and just being herself.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 17, 2021 at 8:01 am #1203987916I still can’t believe she only has one nomination, and it’s been 11 years.
She delivered quite a few great performances after An Education.
Carey has built up the momentum and career for an Oscar win. It’s her time. The most iconic performance of the lineup.

Also, from three AMPAS members, and presumably, voters-
Judd Apatow: “Promising Young Woman is a great film. Troubling, hilarious, emotional, unique in every way. I’ve watched a zillion hours of film and television this year and this was among my very favorites.” See https://mobile.twitter.com/JuddApatow/status/1345593335210151937
Rod Lurie: (Director of The Outpost): “#PromisingYoungWoman? is a revelation – a fully unique work of art. The writer/director #EmeraldFennell deserves every great thing coming to her. #CareyMulligan gives a perf at the level of #Joaquinphoenix in #Jokerm- but with charm and humanity.” See https://mobile.twitter.com/RodLurie/status/1350509063436529664
Also, Lurie re PYW: “The writer-director is @emeraldfennell (Camilla from THE CROWN) and, boy, is she a part of the club now. Carey Mulligan, as a woman on a crusade to dismantle rape culture, is in full throttle mode. Just wonderful.” See https://mobile.twitter.com/RodLurie/status/1350129768037969922
And more from Lurie re PYW: “It will certainly be on my best picture ballot. Five to six noms. So inventive.” See https://mobile.twitter.com/RodLurie/status/1350547581659537408
And finally, Lurie re PYW: “1. Paul Newman said the most important part of a screenplay are the first 10 pages and the most important part of a film are the last 10 minutes. @PromisingFilm delivers on both. And how! The ending is worth it all.” See https://mobile.twitter.com/RodLurie/status/1350122686291140611
Seth Rogen: “I really loved #PromisingYoungWoman and I recommend you watch it even though it made me have the startling realization that I know almost all the words to “Stars are Blind.” See https://mobile.twitter.com/Sethrogen/status/1350997484823318529
January 17, 2021 at 11:26 pm #1203989018WOW! Seems they’re liking it and the Joker comparison is very interesting (in terms of surprise nominations/apparent underdog)…
