    I’d say she’s a coattail nominee.

I don’t get people saying her song was a showstopper, as I’ve never heard it described that way before, and there’s many other songs in that show/film that are way more popular.

I disagree that C. Reilly was a coattail nominee. He was wonderful. The role of Amos is the closest thing that Chicago has to a heart, and he played it beautifully.

What helped John C. Reilly get nominated is that he was in Chicago, The Gangs of New York and The Hours in 2002. How many can say that they were in 3 His profile was definitely raised at the time. At first, I was surprised by his nomination, but it made sense to me.

Queen Latifah’s When You’re Good To Mama is a highlight for me because I have always loved this song and she did a great job with it. I was surprised with her nomination, but I was happy for her.

    Queen Latifah = deserving.

Her performance was big, bold, & beautiful. “When You’re Good to Mama” is iconic!

To be fair, she should have WON Best Supporting Actress for Set It Off

She was pretty good. She gets a big number in what ended up being the Best Picture winner and I’m sure they viewed it as an opportunity to give a nod to a major artist. Not mad that she got nominated.  It’s not like she did nothing or next to nothing like some other recent nominees.

I still would’ve liked to have seen Meryl double nominated for both The Hours and Adaptation. They’re two of her most interesting performances in probably the two most interesting movies she’s ever been in.

Some of my opinion will likely not be much appreciated but… CHICAGO is a major favorite stage musical for me and I love the film. Both Latifah and Zeta-Jones play the two absolute best characters in the show and I feel like neither did the characters justice. The roles were better than they were. Latifah particularly did very little for an obviously over the top character, Zeta-Jones is the same but to a lesser extent. Also, though no fault of Latifah’s I suspect, the sexuality of the character was almost non-existent. Both Bette Midler & Kathy Bates were strong in the running for Mama. I would have much preferred either to play the role.

I’d say Mama Morton’s the fifth best role out of the six principles. Roxie, Velma, Billy, and Amos are all way more interesting and entertaining in my mind.

At the very least, those parts are much more popular.
