I agree that he should’ve won for Schindler’s List, but I can understand why he didn’t. The academy doesn’t usually go for characters who are just despicable to the bitter end like Michael Fassbender in 12 Years a Slave or Denzel Washington in Fences.

I do not understand how Denzel Washington’s character in Fences is any where close to Michael Fassbender’s character in 12 Years a Slave or Ralph Fiennes in Schindler’s List.

He should’ve won for SCHINDLER’S LIST hands down.

He definitely should’ve received nominations for THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, THE CONSTANT GARDENER, and IN BRUGES.

I’m iffy on the nod for ENGLISH PATIENT.

He MAY have deserved a nod for QUIZ SHOW but I feel like I would’ve been more inclined to nominate John Turturro over him.

    Win
Schindler’s List – Fiennes is absolutely terrifying as Amon Göth and this should have been an easy win. I have never supported a Jones win for The Fugitive. I would have preferred if he won for JFK, or even Lincoln.

The English Patient – I’m surprised that Fiennes was an integral part of two massive Best Picture frontrunners in the 90s and he still lost both times. Rush was an unbeatable winner that I have never understood. Maybe I have to rewatch Shine. I saw the film and was surprised he won because I thought the role was supporting. I am also a great fan of Harrelson in The People vs. Larry Flynt.

    Nominations
The Constant Gardner (replace Terrence Howard)
The Grand Budapest Hotel (Carell or Cooper)
    A Bigger Splash (Michael Shannon)

    Honorable Mentions
    Quiz Show
    Sunshine
    The Duchess

Though let’s not forget that Denzel only benefitted from Russell Crowe’s meltdown at BAFTA prior to the Oscars that year. In any case, I think in order for unlikable characters to win, there at least needs to be a sympathy factor.

Denzel would’ve won for Training Day regardless. There was more urgency to give Denzel the Oscar he should’ve won for Malcolm X then there was to give Russell Crowe back-to-back Oscars. That BAFTA meltdown just gave  them another excuse.

He should’ve won for Schindler’s List and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

    One supporting, one lead.
