I wish Jessica Lange had picked more subtle roles like the ones in All That Jazz and Tootsie. She is the queen of meltdowns and I love that but it gets tiring at some point.

Lange has a preference for parts that require outburst of big emotion.

Comedies are supposed to make money. Not necessarily garner critical acclaim. Hence the lack of award season expectation for them. Marisa Tomei’s win carries with it a stigma of controversy because it wasn’t a respectable comedy vehicle she won for. But something crass and wholly mainstream.

The real puzzle is not so much that she won but how she was nominated in the first place; not because she was undeserving but because such films rarely gain any sort of traction in awards season, even for individual performances. It was almost as if Tiffany Haddish had gotten in for Girls Trip today and then won, though My Cousin Vinny might’ve had a tad more prestige with then recent Oscar-winner Joe Pesci in the lead. I’d be interested to hear from anyone following at the time: was there a big campaign surrounding Tomei? Was her film one the earliest video screeners?

I also love how delighted Vanessa Redgrave and Joan Plowright look when hearing Marisa’s name called.

On first viewing, Marriage Story felt somewhat oppressive because the two main characters are white, articulate, emotionally attentive, handsome people and the movie portrays them as being attractive due to those qualities.

I felt similarly about Roma because the movie implied that being a strong, soft-spoken, generous person like the main hero is a virtue (which it is, I guess, but that’s not the only way to live, you know, especially if the person is not privileged).

But I decided to be more generous to the directors and the film. In the end, they’re making a personal film, and they are being honest and earnest. I don’t have to be 100% on board with their sentiment to appreciate their good faith.

Is anyone attending the virtual Austin Film Festival Writer’s conference?
