    1. Parasite: An instant classic, etc., etc. The movie felt like a fable for the age. It has perfect pacing and uses movie as the medium so effectively. What I love about Bong is that he’s so generous to his characters. One very minor nitpick is that some of the image compositions felt a bit generic.

    2. The Host: It has the most amazing monster introductory scene, and all the slapstick comedy about the family hit so close to my heart.

    3. Mother: The first and final shots are so, so haunting. I just love the main hero.

    4. Memories of Murder: Its craft is just brilliant and shows Bong was already a master of movies 20 years ago.

    5. Snowpiercer: Very enjoyable but uneven, with a stronger first half. The action set piece that happens in the dark is so well shot.

    6. Okja: Definitely the most lacking to me. Bong crossed the line and became too campy.

Even he himself has been hard on this one, but I would say it’s an adequate film at the very least. It does stick out like something of a sore thumb compared to his other films though.

    #6-Snowpiercer

This one is definitely a little on the nose with its themes, not to mention I found it a little hard to get through for the first quarter of the film. It did eventually take off for me and I enjoyed it but in the grand scheme, I didn’t really finish the film feeling that strongly about it one way or the other.

    #5-Okja

I thought it was an entertaining film but it also was lacking something. I think it could use another rewatch.

    #4-The Host

I think this film is interesting in how frequently Bong kept us on our toes…we never really knew what to expect and if we did suspect something, it might not actually go that way. It will be interesting to see him go back into more of a horror genre as he said he planned to do with his next Korean language film.

    #3-Mother

Here is where we get into his masterpiece territory. I very much loved Mother to the point where I felt it should’ve been nominated for Best Picture and Kim Hye-ja would’ve been a force in the Actress race. It’s such a haunting film and perhaps the film that felt the most mature of his…not sure why but it just feels more dramatic than some of his others.

    #2-Memories of Murder

This was fantastic. It really does feel like the precursor to Fincher’s ZODIAC. What a truly magnificent crime film and even though the crime in question got solved last fall, it still doesn’t lose any power.

    #1-Parasite

All I’m really going to say about PARASITE is that it may be my favorite film of not just this past decade but maybe even since 2000. It just amazed me that a film with such immense praise actually still blew me away. It lived up to its hype and then some for me, and I think it’s a shame that the actors weren’t recognized for their stellar work beyond the SAG win and some critics prizes.
