I need to watch more non-nominated performances, but I think Streep was absolutely horrendous in August: Osage County and I usually defend her latest nominations or don’t think they are THAT undeserved.

This category was pretty much trash sans Cate. Bullock was good, sure. But a couple out of Julie Deply, Brie Larson, Greta Gerwig, Tilda Swinton, Julia Louis-Dreyfus should have gotten in there to liven it up.

    1. Cate 2. Cate 3. Cate 4. Cate 5. Cate Imo, it really wasn’t a competition.

I loved Blanchett and it was a performance of a lifetime, but the competition was actually REALLY strong. First of all so many deserving contenders were left out as Thompson, Exarchopoulos, Delpy or Larson. Secondly, all of the nominees, except of Meryl Streep had their own fan base. Meryl Streep just won for The Iron Lady, so I don’t think anyone was really pushing her to win another, especially for this typical over the top Streep performance. Amy Adams had an overdue narrative as being the only non-winner category, and next to Gravity, I think American Hustle was also more liked than Philomena, Blue Jasmine or August: Osage County all overall. I think most people in the industry or at all, are really annoyed by the fact that Judi Dench has only one Oscar for basically a cameo performance in supporting. She is a trust-worthy lead star, giving a heartbreaking turn as Philomena Lee, and it would have been a perfectly deserving win for her, so I think she had also the overdue narrative going on, not to mention that Philomena did extremely good nomination-wise. Such sweet English films never do so well. As of Bullock, I think it’s obvious she was runner-up. But she also just won an Oscar. Would it have been different if she wasn’t? I think yes.

So at the end of the day, Blanchett won fairly, but I don’t think it was such an easy win for her. We say it was, because she won everything else and we adored the performance, but all Bullock, Dench and Adams were strong competitors.

    1. Blanchett (an all time best)

    2. Bullock (a winner in a different year)

    3. Dench (probably my favorite of her lead nominations)

    4. Streep (a memorable role)

    5. Adams (don’t remember the performance, but hated the film)

    1. Cate Blanchett
    2. Judi Dench-Philomena
    3. Sandra Bullock-Gravity
    4. Meryl Streep-August: Osage County
    5. Amy Adams-American Hustle

But, yes, this was an exceptional year for this category. I would have pulled Adams out and put Thompson or Adele in.

    1. Sandra Bullock – Gravity
    2. Cate Blanchett – Blue Jasmine
    3. Judi Dench – Philomena
    4. Amy Adams – American Hustle
    5. Meryl Streep – August: Osage County

    Who Should Have Been Considered
Emma Thompson – Saving Mr Banks
Brie Larson – Short Term 12
Adele Exarchopoulos – Blue Is The Warmest Colour

In an absolute ideal world, I’d extend it to six with Bullock, Blanchett, Dench, Thompson, Larson & Exarchopoulos.

Emma Thompson deserved to be nominated for Saving Mr. Banks, a superb comedic and dramatic performance.

Although I liked Streep, Adams & Bullock this year. The final decision was only about Blanchett & Dench, no one else weighed in for me.
