In two days, the third remake of A Star is Born will be released.

    That’s right. The third remake.

Rank the four versions from best to worst (in your humble opinions) below!

    The four versions are:

    1. The original (1937, directed by William A. Wellman and starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March)

    2. The first remake (1954, directed by George Cukor and starring Judy Garland and James Mason)

    3. The second remake (1976, directed by Frank Pierson and starring Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson)

    4. The third remake (2018, directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper)

Here’s a good video to assist you in comparing the four versions in case you don’t have time to watch all four back to back:

    Objective: 1954>2018>>1937>>>>1976

My preference according to which really impressed or touched me: 2018>>1954>>>1937>>1976

    1. 1954 – great direction, script, acting, songs, production design, costumes, camera work, editing. If only the entire original cut was completely available! The best American film of 1954 (:

    2. 1937 – technicolor, terrific lead performances, fascinating camera work that captures Hollywood during the golden age, a tough mature script, great chemistry between the leads

    3. 1976 – mostly I love this one for Barbra Streisand, who is the only one who plays an equal without the patriarchal paternalistic attitudes oozing from the male lead. Also love the music. The chemistry is a bit off and Kristofferson isn’t a strong enough actor to inhabit his role.

    4. 2018 – the movie has its moments, a few well played well-directed scenes, but the lead actress is inexperienced as an actress and it shows (which doesn’t mean that she isn’t good, but she isn’t great), the lead actor can’t sing well enough and is also unlikable, the script is cliche-ridden. A few really good songs, particularly “I’ll Never Love Again” and “Shallow”, and a few vivid scenes but it doesn’t add up. I was most surprised by liking Andrew Dice Clay’s performance as Ally’s father and disappointed by Sam Elliott’s only adequate performance as Jackson’s older brother.

I have not seen the original, and the three remakes have their own strengths and weaknesses
I hope I get to see a fourth remake in which a woman (Emily Blunt?) plays the has-been mentor and a young man as the one discovered by her.
