So I did a bit of research and found that no one has started a thread on this topic yet. Now that I’ve seen every single Oscar winner for Best Actor from the 1960s, here’s how I rank them:

    1. Burt Lancaster-Elmer Gantry
    2. Rex Harrison-My Fair Lady
    3. Gregory Peck-To Kill a Mockingbird
    4. Rod Steiger-In the Heat of the Night
    5. John Wayne-True Grit
    6. Paul Scofield-A Man for All Seasons
    7. Sidney Poitier-Lilies of the Field
    8. Maximillian Schell-Judgement at Nuremberg
    9. Lee Marvin-Cat Ballou
    10. Cliff Robertson-Charly

So what’s your ranking? Even if you haven’t seen all ten of these winners, feel free to rank the ones you have actually seen.

Not a single one of them would have been my choice out of the nominees to win. I really do like the performances numbered 1 through 6 though. Lancaster is usually too much for me. The bottom 3 are not my cup of tea either.

    1. Rod Steiger-In the Heat of the Night
    2. Maximillian Schell-Judgement at Nuremberg
    3. Gregory Peck-To Kill a Mockingbird
    4. Paul Scofield-A Man for All Seasons

    6. Sidney Poitier-Lilies of the Field
    7. Burt Lancaster-Elmer Gantry
    8. Rex Harrison-My Fair Lady
    9. John Wayne-True Grit
    10. Cliff Robertson-Charly

Despite mostly all of them being good, solid performances, I don’t feel too wild about the list. I’m going to have a problem tanking them overall.

    #1-Schell (deserved)
#2-Steiger (deserving but would’ve voted for Tracy or Newman)
    #3-Peck (Either him or O’Toole)
    #4-Lancaster (him or Lemmon)
    #5-Poitier (him or Newman)
#6-Scofield (I do like his performance but it should’ve been Burton)
#7-Harrison (iconic but it should’ve been Sellers)
    #8-Marvin (this should’ve been Steiger’s win)
    #9-Wayne (should’ve been Hoffman)
    #10-Robertson (easily O’Toole)
