March 15, 2021 at 8:57 am #12041345121. Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman – A fearless, funny, and heartbreaking performance. Such an incredible performance from one of the most underrated talents of the decade. A performance for the ages. Also, My favourite of the lineup.
__
2. Vanessa Kirby, Pieces Of A Woman – An acting masterclass, delivered with such bravery and rawness. The harrowing birth scene alone cemented this performance as one of the year’s best performance.
__
3. Frances McDormand, Nomadland – An incredibly subtle and honest performance. Frances makes us feel and relatable for the character with such a simple movement, dialogue and emotions.
__
4. Andra Day, The United States vs. Billie Holiday – This one of the best debut I’ve seen this year. She effortlessly embodied Billie’s heart and soul. Out of five nominees, this is the most technical and challenging performance. One of many examples that a single great performance can save the entire movie to falls in complete awfulness.
__
5. Viola Davis, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom – This is a great performance by the never bad, Viola Davis. She disappear into Ma Rainey’s completely, and commanding the screen with extraordinary energy and charisma. She managed to do the best effort possible with her limited screentime.
__
The ranking of these performances were incredibly hard because they’re all excellent in their own way.

Why do you always seemingly have a problem with people talking about the female performers?
