A weak group of winners. In my opinion Hazanavicius was the only one who deserved to win based on who their competition was although Chazelle and Ho were Ok I guess. While The King’s Speech was a good film there was no way it should have won Picture and Director over The Social Network.

I was bored out of my mind watching The Revenant and Roma is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. In addition to returning his Oscar for that film Cuaron should return the one he won for Gravity too as further compensation.

    Nevertheless, here are my rankings.

    1. Michel Hazanavicius- The Artist
    2. Damien Chazelle- La La Land
    3. Bong Joon Ho-Parasite
    4. Tom Hooper-The King’s Speech
    5. Alfonso Cuaron- Gravity
    6. Ang Lee-Life Of Pi
    7. Guillermo Del Toro-The Shape Of Water
    8. Alejandro Inarritu- Birdman
    9. Alejandro Inarritu- The Revenant
    10. Alfonso Cuaron-Roma

    Deserved nomination (and win):
    1) Alfonso Cuarón, “Gravity”

    Deserved nominations:
    2) Bong Joon Ho, “Parasite”
    3) Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma”

    Didn’t deserve a nomination, though he’s good:
    4) Ang Lee, “Life of Pi”

Both of them don’t deserve to be in the worst group:
    5) Damien Chazelle, “La La Land”
    6) Guillermo Del Toro, “The Shape of Water”

    Their win is ofensive:
    7) Alejandro González Inarritu, “The Revenant”
    8) Tom Hooper, “The King’s Speech”
    9) Alejandro González Inarritu, “Birdman”
    10) Michel Hazanavicius, “The Artist”

I’m always astonished by the amount of hate Innaritu gets in these forums. The man has a knack for getting great performances out of his actors and he clearly has a talented eye. Not sure what standards we are judging directors by, but it seems like people here just don’t love his movies as much as most and are making that the basis for their rating of him.

I mean I liked but didn’t love Roma or TSOW but can still recognize Cuaron and Guillermo Del Toro are immensely talented directors who are at some level very deserving Oscar winners.

It still amazes me that Chazelle is the only American in this group. I wish the acting winners were equally diverse.

    1. Bong Joon-Ho – Parasite
    2. Alfonso Cuarón – Roma
    3. Alfonso Cuarón – Gravity
    4. Alejandro G. Iñárritu – The Revenant
    5. Damien Chazelle – La La Land
    6. Ang Lee – Life of Pi
    7. Tom Hooper – The King’s Speech
    8. Alejandro G. Iñárritu – Birdman
    9. Michel Hazanavicius – The Artist
    10. Guillermo Del Toro – The Shape of Water
