How would you rank the Oscar-bait performances from real life figures who actually won the award in this century? Consider only the leading categories. I think we can all agree the DiCaprio performance shouldn’t count here.

    My ranking:

1 – Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
2 – Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
    3 – Charlize Theron, Monster
    4 – Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
    5 – Sean Penn, Milk
6 – Adrien Brody, The Pianist
7 – Nicole Kidman, The Hours
    8 – Colin Firth, The King’s Speech
9 – Julia Roberts, Erin Brockovich
10 – Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything
11 – Helen Mirren, The Queen
    12 – Jamie Foxx, Ray
13 – Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
14 – Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
15 – Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
16 – Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
17 – Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
18 – Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland

    Out of curiosity, why?

The amount of reliable material we have from Hugh Glass cannot be compared to these other characters; I don’t think DiCaprio created his performance as standard biopic fare either, which is the point of the thread. Does anyone see The Revenant as a biopic?! But if you must, then go ahead and include his performance in your ranking

Good point – but a real life figure is a real life figure so I am including him. (If only he’d won for The Wolf of Wall Street he’d be my number one. Oh well.)
Would love to know where he would have ranked in your list.

1 Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose
    2 Charlize Theron, Monster
    3 Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln
    4 Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
    5 Adrien Brody, The Pianist

    6 Nicole Kidman, The Hours
    7 Jamie Foxx, Ray
    8 Sean Penn, Milk
    9 Julia Roberts, Erin Brockovich
    10 Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant

    11 Helen Mirren, The Queen
12 Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
    13 Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
14 Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything
15 Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
16 Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady
17 Colin Firth, The King’s Speech

    Haven’t seen:
    Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland

    Phillip Seymour Hoffman – Capote.
The best without a doubt for me.

I know I know. I am going way back
Diana Ross. Lady Sings the Blues. Billy Holiday. Should have won the Oscar.

I was a die-hard supporter of that performance back in the day around here… I’d probably have it right behind Theron, if not ahead.
