First of all, I am a woman who is also a writer. I have a vested interest in seeing other women and non-men succeed in all forms of art (provided their work is not politically corrupt). Which brings us to Promising Young Woman and Nomadland, two pieces of morally bankrupt pablum. The former relishes is some faux-woke, easy rape-revenge stunts before tipping fully into one of the most disgusting bait-and-switches I’ve ever seen, and pats the cops on the back in the end lol. The latter casts a woman worth $30 million in a docudrama where she gets to play around in the mud with the other poors without buying them actual houses with her actual money, and doesn’t even have the common courtesy to drag Amazon to Hell and back. Also, Zhao is the daughter of a steel mogul lol; both her and her star could have done more good in the world in skipping the production of their little moovey and just give each of the houseless people a million dollars each.

I don’t think what is more delusional. This comment, or the fact that 4 people agree with this bullshit.

    1. Promising Young Woman
    2. Minari
    3. Sound of Metal
    4. One Night in Miami
    5. The Father
    6. Nomadland
    7. The White Tiger
    8. Judas and the Black Messiah
    9. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (I honestly don’t mind its nomination)
    10. The Trial of the Chicago 7

Love the first two just about equally, for very different reasons. One so brilliantly subversive, the other so beautifully sincere, and both so powerful in their own unique ways. Chicago 7 automatically bottom for the tasteless way it rewrites history and leaving in lines like the ‘you know what would be ironic?’ ‘what’ ‘I said  do you know what would be ironic’ exchange in (god that was PAINFUL), they made some really good choices otherwise this year – love seeing inspired nods like The White Tiger.

Also I highly recommend people to read One Night in Miami‘s screenplay and compare it with the original play. Powers did a LOT of work in adapting it to the silver screen, and combined different parts of it in different arrangements to make it more cinematic. For example, Jim Brown’s big scene with Malcolm is build off a scene that exists within the play, but adding in portions of dialogue from other parts of the play to add to its power; and also all the initial flashbacks, the way the finale plays out, all show great examples of his awareness in translating it to the silver screen.

I never like to rank them all together because I find that to be very unfair. So to keep them separate, but equal, here’s how I rank the screenplay nominees (that I’ve seen) in both of their respective categories.

    1. Promising Young Woman
    2. The Trial of the Chicago 7
    3. Minari
    4. Judas and the Black Messiah
    5. Sound of Metal

    1. The Father
    2. Nomadland
    3. One Night in Miami
    4. The White Tiger
