I love Alison Janney and her performance was deserving but she shouldn’t have swept for that. Laurie Metcalf literally (imo) gives one of the best supporting actress performances OF ALL TIME in Lady Bird.
I’ve rewatched Lady Bird twice since this Oscar season and I completely agree. It’s the definition of what a supporting role and performance should be. Definitely one of my all time favorites.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 12, 2020 at 8:27 am #1203700747I mean imo both performers gave a masterclass in acting but Metcalf literally gave a game-changing performance.
I hope she can win eventually. One of the greatest actors of her generation.

10. Kate Winslet, Steve JobsSeptember 13, 2020 at 10:20 am #1203703214I do still find it interesting how Allison Janney managed to surge through the televised awards. I guess the love for her in the business just is that palpable. It certainly isn’t a bad performance (far from it)…in fact, I would even say it’s worthy overall. However, it is still basically a one note performance in many ways.
Metcalf, however, was a revelation. Funny and stubborn and she felt so real. Considering how Ladybird had the stronger critical pedigree and got key nominations that I TONYA didn’t, you’d think Metcalf would’ve been a good way to honor the film.
I’ll go ahead and rank my choices based on the top 15 above.
#15-Melissa McCarthy
#14-Marina del Tavira
#13-Kate Winslet
#12-Scarlett Johannson
#11-Jessica Chastain
#10-Rooney Mara (such blatant fraud, I did rank her a smidge lower for that reason)
#9-Lesley Manville
#8-Sally Hawkins
#7-Amy Adams, THE MASTER
#6-Emma Stone (blatant category fraud but she was still great)
#5-Rachel Weisz
#4-Michelle Williams
#3-Florence Pugh
#2-Naomie Harris
#1-Laurie MetcalfReplyCopy URL“The art of making art is putting it together...”

Probably due to recency bias and lack of other nominations for the film that would give it must-see status. And yeah, it sucks that not enough people have seen her in it but I can’t really talk as I still have two blind spots from this list myself.
