The cast were perfect. I wouldn’t change anyone. Or maybe McGregor. But I’m not sure.February 17, 2014 at 4:21 pm #141160
I would DEFINITELY replace Benedict Cumberbatch. I may be alone on this but that man can’t act for his life most of the times. I don’t see the potential or the talent that everyone else seems to think there is. My choice would probably be James McAvoy.February 17, 2014 at 4:45 pm #141161
Violet: Joan Rivers
Barbra: Tony Collette
Mattie Fae: Margo was exactly what I envisioned for the character, so I wouldn’t change her.February 17, 2014 at 4:51 pm #141162
Haven’t seen the film but have read the play and Sissy Spacek comes to mind for Violet.February 17, 2014 at 4:57 pm #141163
I have some weird choices, but I feel like they could work.
Jane Fonda as Violet Weston
Jennifer Garner as Barbara Weston-Fordham
Kevin Spacey as Bill Fordham
Gary Oldman as Charles Aiken
Abigail Breslin as Jean Fordham (same)
Michael Shannon as “Little Charles”
Reese Witherspoon as Karen Weston
Meryl Streep as Mattie Fae Aiken (better suited for this role)
Paul Giamatti as Steve Heidebrecht (to make it even creepier)
Amy Adams as Ivy Weston
John Goodman as Beverly Weston
Misty Upham as Johnna Monevata (same)

MERYL has no equals
but i wouldve cast LAURA LINNEY as Barbara…
If Meryl did NOT want the part, then either
ANNETTE BENING OR JESSICA LANGE..February 17, 2014 at 11:17 pm #141165
Tracy Letts initially objected in casting British actors for A:OC. Although Andrea Riseborough (as Karen) could have been the 3rd Brit but had to beg off (according to early press release) due to scheduling conflicts. And Tom Wilkinson (as Beverly) could have been the 4th Brit.
Shirley Maclaine, Helen Mirren, Sally Field, Melissa Leo were said to have pitched-campaigned & expressed great interest for the Violet role. In one interview, Melissa Leo was quoted saying “she would kill to see Meryl’s take on Violet”.
Others considered & talked about for roles were:
Dianne Wiest as Mattie Fae
Jim Carrey as Steve
Renee Zellweger as Ivy
Chloe Moretz as Jean
Jeremy Renner as Bill or Little Charles
Michael Shannon as Bill or Little Charles
Gary Cole as Steve (reprising his role in London stage version)February 18, 2014 at 12:33 am #141166
GLENN CLOSE as VIOLET WESTONFebruary 18, 2014 at 11:15 am #141167
I’d replace McGregor and add Jude Law in is place. Other than that keep everyone else.February 18, 2014 at 11:41 am #141168
If Kathy Bates had played Matti Fae, she would’ve been on the supporting actress Oscar list this year for sure.February 18, 2014 at 11:45 am #141169

I couldn’t agree more. He was terribly miscast, and couldn’t pull of the look of a middle aged unemployed loser with what a pretty boy he is.
Other than that, I really loved the cast. Most especially Streep, Martindale, Nicholson, Cooper, Upton and Roberts.
Someone brought up the idea that Melissa Leo would’ve made a good Violet, and I can actually see her playing off that role extremely well.February 18, 2014 at 12:43 pm #141170
Violet Weston – Faye Dunaway
Barbara Weston-Fordham – Robin Wright
Karen Weston – Toni Collette
Ivy Weston – Vera Farmiga
Mattie Fae Aiken – Kathy Bates
Charlie Aiken – Ed Harris
Bill Fordham – Clive Owen
Jean Fordham – Elle Fanning
“Little Charles” Aiken – Michael Shannon
Steve Heidebrecht – Paul Giamatti
Johnna Monevata – Misty Upham was perfect here
Beverly Weston – Al Pacino (since it’s basically a cameo role I think he would work, probably not if it was a bigger presence)
