I had an idea for a fun little challenge/experiment, where you take the four Oscar-winning roles of each year and hypothetically recast them with other actors who have never been Oscar nominated (or if it’s easier to think of, nominated but never won) that you think would’ve fit well. Here’s what I’ve come up with for my personal lineups of the last five years (I’m only going to cast for the movies I’ve seen, so if a role is left out it’s because I haven’t seen the movie yet):
2019
Paul Dano as Arthur Fleck
Drew Barrymore as Judy Garland
Bruce Campbell as Cliff Booth
Julie Delpy as Nora Fanshaw2018
Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury
Lena Headey as Queen Anne
Jeffrey Wright as Dr. Don Shirley
Kerry Washington as Sharon Rivers2017
Jamie Lee Curtis as Mildred Hayes (the idea that inspired this whole challenge)
Colin Farrell as Officer Jason Dixon
Margo Martindale as LaVona Golden2016
Ewan McGregor as Lee Chandler
Amanda Seyfried as Mia Dolan
Michael Kenneth Williams as Juan2015

I don’t know about Kidman. Dern won cause she was overdue and on a hot streak. Kidman doesn’t have any real narrative. Robbie more than likely would’ve reaped the rewards.

I am sick and tired of these people. She’s not Korean.
Gong Li is Chinese-born Singaporean actress and starring in mostly China.
For me, casting of Memoirs of a Geisha (Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, and Michelle Yeoh played Japanese) is racist to me.
We are not just Asians

I’m well aware that Gong Li is not Korean, but with respect, I believe you are conflating race and ethnicity. Do you think it was “racist” to cast Ruth Negga, an Ethiopian-born Irish actress who has starred mostly in Great Britain as an American in Loving, or to cast Jonathan Pryce, a Welsh-born actor who has starred mostly in Great Britain as Argentinian Pope Francis in The Two Popes? I sincerely intend no offense or disrespect.

Denzel Washington, an American black man, playing Steve Biko, a South African black man, can’t be called racism.
