    Why do I have a feeling the earlier post is referring to the fact that Smith is also not the first openly gay man to win an Oscar?

    Apparently, Ian McKellen’s statement that Smith referenced was that there have been no openly gay acting Oscar winners.

    Michael Keaton starred in two best picture winners in a row without winning himself or anyone from his movies winning. Also two years in a row that the best picture winner won zero acting awards. Sam Smith was wrong plenty of gay songwriters won and Dustin Lance Black a gay man won for MILK screenplay. However no gay actors won.
