In recent weeks, someone on Twitter has been asking Matt Neglia and his team at Next Best Picture to take any previous lineup in about five categories at the Oscars (Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress) and replace one of the nominees with someone else. I thought it would be fun to do that here in the forums.

For those interested in participating, what I want you all to do is take a previous Oscar lineup in each of the five aforementioned categories where you’ve seen all the nominees, and replace one of the contenders with someone who you personally would’ve nominated. Though please don’t use a previous lineup where you haven’t seen all the nominees because that wouldn’t be fair if you decide to replace a contender you haven’t actually seen.

For an example, I’m going to offer you my choices.

    Best Director (2013)
    Alfonso Cuarón-Gravity
    Steve McQueen-12 Years a Slave
    Alexander Payne-Nebraska
    David O. Russell-American Hustle
Martin Scorsese-The Wolf of Wall Street

I’d personally take out Alexander Payne because I thought Nebraska was a tad overrated. Who I’d replace him with is Paul Greengrass for Captain Phillips.

    Best Actor (2001)
    Russell Crowe-A Beautiful Mind
    Sean Penn-I Am Sam
    Will Smith-Ali
    Denzel Washington-Training Day
    Tom Wilkinson-In the Bedroom

I’d personally take out Denzel Washington for two reasons. While the performance itself was good, I didn’t think it was worthy of a win. Not to mention that Ethan Hawke was much more of a lead in Training Day than Denzel was. Plus let’s face it, he only benefited from Russell Crowe’s meltdown at BAFTA leading up to the Oscars. Who I’d replace Denzel with is Guy Pearce for Memento.

    Best Actress (1995)
    Susan Sarandon-Dead Man Walking
    Elizabeth Shue-Leaving Las Vegas
    Sharon Stone-Casino
Meryl Streep-The Bridges of Madison County
    Emma Thompson-Sense & Sensibility

I’d personally take out Emma Thompson mainly because I had only seen Sense & Sensibility once several years ago, and I don’t really remember much of what I actually thought of the film itself and her performance. Who I’d replace her with is Julia Ormond for Sabrina. While the original Billy Wilder film from 1954 features one of my favorite performances from Audrey Hepburn, I thought Ormond did a great job making the role her own in Sydney Pollack’s remake.

    Best Supporting Actor (2012)
    Alan Arkin-Argo
    Robert De Niro-Silver Linings Playbook
    Phillip Seymour Hoffman-The Master
    Tommy Lee Jones-Lincoln
    Christoph Waltz-Django Unchained

This is such a great lineup, but I’d personally take out Christoph Waltz. As great as he is in the movie and doesn’t even finish in last place in my personal rankings, the one performance from Django Unchained I would’ve nominated (and awarded) in this category is Leonardo DiCaprio.

    Best Supporting Actress (2018)
    Amy Adams-Vice
    Marina de Tavira-Roma
Regina King-If Beale Street Cold Talk
    Emma Stone-The Favourite
    Rachel Weisz-The Favourite

I’d personally take out Marina de Tavira mainly because I honestly don’t remember much of what I thought of her performance in Roma (then again, I haven’t even seen the film since it premiered on Netflix). Who I’d replace her with is Claire Foy for First Man.

I’ll do 2020’s above the line categories:

Picture: Remove Joker and add The Farewell

Director: Remove Todd Phillips, Joker and add Taika Waititi, Jojo Rabbit

Actor: Remove Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and add Taron Egerton, Rocketman

Actress: Remove Cynthia Erivo, Harriet and add Awkwafina, The Farewell

Supporting Actor: Remove Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (great performance, but and egregious case or category fraud) and add Song Kang-ho, Parasite

Supporting Actress: Remove Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell and add Zhao Shuzhen, The Farewell

Original Screenplay: Remove Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and add Lulu Wang, The Farewell

Adapted Screenplay: Remove Todd Phillips & Scott Silver, Joker and add Andrew Stanton & Stephany Folsom, Toy Story 4

In the ’86 Supporting Actress lineup, I would take out Tess Harper and replace her with Cathy Tyson from Mona Lisa. That was one hell of a breakthrough performance.

I know it’s replace one nominee but I do have to add that I, too, would’ve replaced essentially all the nominees in Lead and Supporting Actress this year.

    LEAD:
    Awkwafina, THE FAREWELL
Adèle Haenel, PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE
    Lupita Nyong’o, US
    Florence Pugh, MIDSOMMAR
    Alfre Woodard, CLEMENCY

    SUPPORTING:
    Cho Yeo-Jeong, PARASITE
    Jang Hyae-jin, PARASITE
    Lee Jung-eun, PARASITE
    Park So-dam, PARASITE
    Florence Pugh, LITTLE WOMEN

**and yes, after rewatching a PARASITE, I feel comfortable letting them take over Supporting for my ballot.

In Supporting Actor, Song Kang-ho should’ve replaced Pitt or Hopkins.

In Lead Actor, Adam Sandler should’ve replaced DiCaprio.

I’ll have to think about some of the other years.
