Richard Linklater is set to direct a multi-year film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim & George Furth’s 1981 stage musical, Merrily We Roll Along, starring Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein. Linklater will be shooting it in similar fashion he did with Boyhood by beginning principal photography in reverse chronological order as the musical ends with the characters in their mid-20s and just embarking on their entertainment careers. He’ll then resume production in 20 years when the cast are much older.

I’ve never seen Merrily We Roll Along or listened to its score, so I can’t say how I feel about that musical as a whole. But Boyhood was such a wonderful film, so I think Richard Linklater could pull it off. It kind of reminds me of Michael Apted’s Up documentary films that he makes every 7 years. It’s something he’s done pretty much his entire directorial career.

Using the same actors over a lengthy production was an effective gimmick which worked before, so I don’t understand the need to do it again? 20 years seems a bit of a stretch. What if the actors or director aren’t around then?

Linklater hasn’t really had a misstep yet, and this sounds wonderful. Looking forward to this journey!

Don’t mean to be a downer here but Linklater’s already 59 and the average life expectancy of a US citizen is 78.

There are some beautiful songs in this show (“Not a Day Goes By”, “Now You Know”), but the story has always been extremely problematic. The NY Times called the original production “a shambles” and it ran only two weeks. It’s been revised and revived umpteen times since then, but never to anyone’s real satisfaction.

Bold of him to assume there will be breathable air in 20 years, or theaters that screen non-Disney movies.

My initial reaction upon reading about this was that Richard Linklater wants an Oscar badly. That aside I think this movie could be problematic if they don’t figure out the story, which is the weakness of the musical; the score is pretty great. The casting interests me, and as lover of movie musicals I look forward to eventually seeing this.

High time to get awards season 2042 rolling. I’m smelling nominations in Picture, Directing, Actress, Sound (I trust we will only have one category for that by then), Cinematography, Original Song and obviously Screenplay. And yes, Beanie Feldstein for that long-overdue win!
