He’s Really Back! Ricky Gervais Returning as Golden Globes Host Published: November 16, 2011 @ 1:41 pm By Brent Lang
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association must be gluttons for punishment.
After weeks of rumors, the organization announced Wednesday that Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Golden Globes for a third year.
A year ago, the prospects of Gervais taking the stage again at the Beverly Hills Hilton seemed impossible. The British comedian presided over an insult laden broadcast that poked fun at major stars such as Bruce Willis and Robert Downey Jr., and even the non-profit organization behind the awards show.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association voted for the controversial British comedian’s return after meeting with NBC official Doug Vaughn, the group said.
The Golden Globes awards ceremony, which will be televised worldwide, will be held on January 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.November 16, 2011 at 2:09 pm #44020
I liked the little stint he had two or three years ago, but last year was rather uncomfortable (panning to people’s reactions – unsure of whether to laugh or not).November 16, 2011 at 2:10 pm #44021
Well, I had no problem laughing. Out loud as well.November 16, 2011 at 2:13 pm #44022
To be honest, I kind of wince any time a host insults some of their guests (be it Ricky Gervais or Armond White).November 16, 2011 at 2:15 pm #44023
Ew why? I thought for sure he wouldnt return after this year. In 2010 he was very funny and classy. But this year all he did was make jokes that were very uncomfortable, and said many unneccesary things. The “Thanking God for being an Atheist” at the end of the show was very offensive as well.November 16, 2011 at 2:32 pm #44024
YAY! I’m excited. Maybe the HFPA will think twice before nominating bad drama films like “The Tourist” in the comedy category.November 16, 2011 at 2:34 pm #44025
Me too. He’s the best host at these things that I’ve ever seen.November 16, 2011 at 3:24 pm #44026
HOORAY!! I thought he ROCKED IT last year.November 16, 2011 at 4:03 pm #44027
Great. I hope he brings it the 3rd year in a row. He was hilarious last year.November 16, 2011 at 4:27 pm #44028
This makes me kinda excited.. The discomfort and tension in the air last year was so incredibly fun to watch.November 16, 2011 at 5:41 pm #44029
I guess I’m in the minority then, cause I thought he was terrible last year. It was uncomfortable to watch Ricky make everyone in the ballroom uncomfortable. Some may find that stuff funny, but I certainly didn’t. Hopefully, he won’t treat the ceremony like a roast this time around.November 16, 2011 at 6:42 pm #44030
I would prefer GG go back to not having a host. Lets make everyone uncomfortable and have everything be awkward may work for The Office or Extras but this is a three hour show not 20 minutes!November 16, 2011 at 7:02 pm #44031
I just don’t enjoy Gervais’s style of humor. Not The Office, not Extras, not his hosting.
But it’s OK, because I don’t enjoy the Golden Globes, either.November 16, 2011 at 7:16 pm #44032
Woo-hoo! People are so uptight. I hope Gervais brings the laugh, but at the same time dials back on some of the unneccessary crass.
