Robert De Niro’s turn as the title character of this Martin Scorsese’s film is currently and had long been in the top three of the GoldDerby’s odds. After the announcement of the nominations of both the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild awards, it’s quite shocking to see no sign of De Niro in the nominees for Best Actor. Why is this so?

He supposedly said some negative stuff about the Golden Globes once and people think that was them holding a grudge. (Don’t know what he said. Anyone know?)

That doesn’t explain the SAG snub which is just kind of odd.

He was truly deserving in my opinion. I can’t even explain his snub.

I’m not sure either. The movie got raves. It’s winning awards. His two main costars, who share most of their scenes with him, are getting notices. It’s odd.

De Niro’s performance was probably too taciturn and internalized, his film too long, and he has been dealing with criticism in the public eye and I guess the Twitter sphere for some personal failings.

The Globes don’t like that he called them out for being starfuckers, and SAG has him covered with the lifetime achievement award. I still have him in at the Oscars.

He’s one of the very best actors working these days (and he was brilliant in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s), but the first two thirds of the movie while he had his face full of CGI effects just affected his expression lines (a bit like “plastic surgery” does). By the end of the movie, without those effects, he’s the most soulful and watchable DeNiro of the whole movie no matter he’s on screen for more than 2 hours by the time. I would even say he’s wooden during the first hours of THE IRISHMAN.
On the other hand, I think the de-aging effects suited Pesci’s and Pacino’s faces better and I didn’t feel their performances affected like DeNiro’s

I think most of the defenses for De Niro are kinda weak. He was still nominated at the Globes for The Wizard of Lies recently which was not nearly as big a contender in the Limited/TV Movie side as The Irishman is on the film side. People say SAG felt they had De Niro covered with the Lifetime Achievement Award, but they still chose to nominate ScarJo for Jojo Rabbit even though she was a lock for Marriage Story. I think De Niro will also likely miss BAFTA, but could make it in at the Oscars. However, he missed these places because they didn’t think he was top five, not because of these other reasons.

I’m surprised noone has mentioned the sexual assault allegation against him back in October. I think that is indeed the main reason Hollywood is starting to turn their back on him like James Franco.

Agreed. It was a weird situation where the technology could not keep up with DeNiro (the uncanny face that looked like a video game character) and DeNiro could not to keep up with the technology (that atrocious scene where a “young” Frank beats a man like a 70-year-old DeNiro would beat a man).

Robert is in trouble with an Oscar nom.
SAG he can pick up with an Ensemble win, special citation aside. But I think Hollywood can win here.
The Globe miss is somewhat surprising. But it’s clearly not a good sign for his chances.
Can never rule him out for Oscar but it seems there’ll be at least one actor in the mix in supporting.

Because he doesn’t deserve to be nominated. He did nothing award worthy. What a boring and lifeless performance in a more boring and lifeless movie
