Now that the press tour for Rocketman is starting in earnest, I thought I would create this topic.
Rocketman is a “fantasy musical” about Elton John’s life and career, starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard. It’s directed by Dexter Fletcher and will be released on May 24 (UK) / May 31 (US).
Taron Egerton speaks about the film and his role in a detailed interview for British GQ (with quotes from Fletcher, John’s husband Furnish and Madden):
Egerton and Madden also did a hilarious episode of Carpool Karaoke:
My hopes are really high for that film as it will be more of a musical rather than a straightforward biopic and apparently it will also be R-Rated due to Elton’s drug abuse and gay sex scenes. Fingers crossed for no whitewashing this time!April 3, 2019 at 4:40 am #1202838263This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.April 3, 2019 at 7:25 am #1202838426
And am I too cynical to think that the controversy around that 40 second scene was just an early PR move to create some buzz before the real promo starts?
Yes, that occurred to me too. If it was a PR stunt, then we could call it successful though. Everyone from the LGBT community to straight females got upset about it lol who wouldn’t want to see a hot sex scene between two total hotties Madden and Egerton?
Besides, the film has been marketed as R-Rated for a few months now. Why now go back and try to cut a 40 sec scene for a lower rating? Doesn’t make sense.April 3, 2019 at 7:25 am #1202838428
Anyways, this gives me so much hope for Madden’s award chances:
“John’s in love with Elton and all that,” explains Madden. “But very much seeing the potential for himself. They fall in love and then there’s elements of darkness, manipulation, and as Elton becomes more and more successful and absurd, John becomes much more opportunistic and manipulative.”
That Moulin Rouge-esque acid trip musicality meant that everyone in the film breaks into song as and when the narrative demands it (Madden, for example, does a particularly theatrical rendition of “Honky Cat”).April 3, 2019 at 12:36 pm #1202838841This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.April 3, 2019 at 3:12 pm #1202839048This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.April 3, 2019 at 4:19 pm #1202839081
Graham Norton would be the most obvious choice indeed. But I am wondering how much of the press tour Madden will be able to do? He might not have much (if any) time, depending how large his role is in 1917. Principle Photography started this Monday (April 1st).
I agree the release date is unfortunate with Rocketman. But, if you think about it, the campaign for it has already started a year out. Madden attended every major award ceremony this year (bar the Oscars) and mentioned the film in interviews at all of them. Then the cast presented at the BAFTAs and Egerton sang a duet with Elton John at his Oscar party. If that’s not foreshadowing, I don’t know what.
Oh and there is also speculation that Rocketman might premiere at the Cannes Film Festival!April 10, 2019 at 6:08 am #1202846713This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.April 10, 2019 at 6:50 am #1202846748
Yes Elton John!!!! I love his artistry! An iconic singer oh my god. The film won’ t be as good as Bohemian Rhapsody but it will be fun!

Taron Egerton is guaranteed a Golden Globe nomination. BTW, he looks incredibly hot in those costumes. They really did Elton a favor.

Official video of Taron Egerton singing Rocketman was just released. It features more scenes from the film, including the baseball / stadium one. That alone already looks better than anything BR did.
Rocketman is also officially premiering at Cannes (out of competition) on May 16.May 4, 2019 at 7:06 am #1202879694
What is it rated?May 5, 2019 at 6:22 am #1202880430
What is it rated?
It’s said to get an R-Rating due to drug and substance abuse and a pretty explicit gay sex scene. However, they were some rumours floating around that the sex scene would be cut to lower the rating. So, it remains to be seen.
Personally, I hope they keep it R-Rated. It would be more honest and it would be another factor with which Rocketman can distinguish itself from Bohemian Rhapsody.
