I think the role below can be played by both actresses
-Miranda from Devil Wears Prada
-Liev’s mother from Manchurian Candidate
-Madeline from Devil Becomes Her
-The Sister from Doubt
-Vice President from Air Force One
-Mother in law from Big Little Lies
ReplyMarch 26, 2021 at 9:04 am #1204159464Meryl was excellent in The Devil Wears Prada but I always felt that Close would have been much better. That role is more or less a combination of her characters in Fatal Attraction, The Wife, Dangerous Liaisons and 101 Dalmatians lol.

March 26, 2021 at 9:05 am #1204159466Only Meryl can do the roles which depend on extreme technicality (Julie and Julia, Iron Lady) and/or femininity (Bridges of Madison County, Sophie’s Choice). Glenn isn’t great with accents, etc.
I think only Glenn could have done the villain roles in Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, etc. or the androgynous role in Albert Nobbs.
Love them both, but Meryl’s just more versatile, which is one reason she’s been able to sustain her film career better.
I wonder why they’re always compared though. Aren’t their acting styles totally different?

I’d have liked to see Sissy Spacek in that role.

This is partly why I think Close would’ve been a less inspired choice for Miranda. Streep was more unexpected and surprising in this type of role.

Too subtle? What?
ReplyCopy URLMarch 26, 2021 at 11:24 am #1204159770It’s the subtlety that makes Streep’s Miranda a piece of mesmerizing acting. Can’t imagine if it’s loud and shouty like Laura Dern in Little Big Lies.

This. I’m sure Glenn would have it brilliant in a different way, but what Meryl did was heaven.March 26, 2021 at 11:39 am #1204159826It’s the subtlety that makes Streep’s Miranda a piece of mesmerizing acting. Can’t imagine if it’s loud and shouty like Laura Dern in Little Big Lies.
Have you seen The Wife?
