A24 and New Regency will be partnering to produce an upcoming biopic based on the life of singer and rock icon Ronnie Spector. Both companies have acquired her life rights and the rights to her autobiography Be My Baby (which she wrote with Vince Waldron). Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury is being eyed to adapt the script. Marc Platt will serve as a producer on the project, as well as Spector herself and her manager Jonathan Greenfield who will both executive produce.
Emmy-winning actress Zendaya is in talks to produce and star, who the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend personally wished for and selected to portray herself. The film will focus particularly on the early years of Spector’s career and the formation of The Ronettes with her sister and cousin. It will also place emphasis on her abusive marriage to Phil Spector (after being signed by him) and the fight to obtain her music rights in their subsequent divorce. A release date has not been announced at this time for the currently untitled biopic.
