Whose nomination do you think is the nastiest? Rooney Mara in Carol, or Lakeith Stanfield in Judas? I think these are arguably the two most recent examples of category fraud.
Both were clearly the leads of their respective films, yet submitted in supporting at the Oscars (Mara was even nominated in lead at separate ceremonies).
Obviously both deserved their nominations, 100%, and were brilliant in their movies, but they should have been nominated in leading. I really thought that Mara could have won. And with Carol, it was just a clear switch between Rooney and Cate in the category placement; with Judas, they submitted both actors in supporting, as opposed to putting Daniel in lead.

Both Mara and Vikander were obviously lead.

On Warner Bros’ campaign site he’s listed in Best Actor:

My guess would be that both of the Judas actors were simply affected by the Barry Fitzgerald rule. They received votes in Lead and Supporting but are only allowed to be nominated in one, so the higher vote total determines their placement.

To me, he was easily the lead of JUDAS. I also do feel Kaluuya is co-lead but I do feel you could make a case for him to be Supporting. It certainly isn’t the worst case of fraud.
I do love that Stanfield got recognized at the very least and it makes up for the fact that their category still has SBC in it.
I almost feel like Stanfield in Supporting is the equivalent of putting Pacino in Supporting for THE GODFATHER.

I feel like it’s both for different reasons. Stanfield because the Academy outright IGNORED that they campaigned him as lead. Mara it outrageous because they campaigned her as supporting and Blanchett as lead when it’s clearly the other way around, which is the studio’s fault.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 15, 2021 at 4:50 pm #1204136722Weirdly, I think I’m more okay with Stanfield than with Mara. At least, him and Kaluuya are nominated in the same category when Mara and Blanchett weren’t.

So if the voters voted for Beatrice Straight’s 5 minutes performance in lead actress category, she will be nominated there? Gosh…
