I watched Lupita’s clips and she’s so eloquent. I love.

I mentioned Jojo Rabbit. The reality is that both will probably focus on Marriage Story (just as Adams did when she discussed ‘Arrival’ without even giving mention to her experience working on ‘Nocturnal Animals’). I’ve seen Marriage Story and Dern gives a great performance but it’s a small role, and I hear that her role in Little Women isn’t big either. I just don’t see the need for both of them to be there but I know that’s probably a minority opinion.

Both Derns team and THR know she’s in it to win it. She’s also charismatic as all heck and pretty popular online after Renata, so I’m sure they wanted her regardless

I just love Lupita. Such a talent. And I also love Laura; she seems like one of the nicest people in that industry. She’s always so calm, high-spirited and kind. It’s no surprise that she’s so popular. I need her to win that Oscar.</p>

Oscar FYC - Lupita Nyong'o & Elisabeth Moss ("Us") - Best Actress & Supporting Actress. It must happen; otherwise the Tethered are coming.

i mean we had Viggo + Mahershala for Green Book last year together and also Nicole Kidman + Reese Witherspoon for BLL, and both Reese and Mahershala have done it before. I don’t think Dern and Scarjo have done the roundtable before.

Jennifer Lopez is really in it to win it, but I think she’ll be lucky just to get nominated. I’m not even sure if she should be nominated but all her campaigning has now made me desperately want to see her get her Oscar nom.

I also think Laura is a sweetheart. That’s why her explosive characters are so interesting to watch.
Let’s hope the interviewer (haven’t seen her before) does a better job than those guys over at THR. The one who always interrupts is the worst.

I think Dern was in the year Wild was released. But the combo LD and SJ haven’t done it.

It makes complete logical sense in terms of driving interest and revenue for THR to have both Dern and Johansson on the roundtable, and it makes sense for both of their individual campaigns. I just would’ve liked to have heard someone from a completely different film for more variety.

I know and I thought the same across the board, particularly for the Green Book actors. It’s nothing against Dern or Johansson specifically (in fact Dern is one of my favourite actresses). I feel like the roundtables are being used as a promotional tool rather than to genuinely shine light on performances and experiences.

I was close! Just missed N’yongo. Weird Robbie isn’t here.

they could all totally be nominated. This is the most air-tight roundtable group I can remember

This, they only one I’m overly confident in is Lupita and even then she can be the Ruth Negga to Saoirse Ronan’s Amy Adams.

A passion sole-acting pick that gets in over a 4th placed contender in an across the board hit but whose lead lacks passion.

Praise God. Thank goodness for the presence of ScarJo and JLo. Hopefully they say something controversial. Without them this would have just been another back scratching bore.

    FYC:

Antonio Banderas and Asier Etxeandia, Dolor y Gloria (Best Actor/Supporting Actor)
Emily Beecham, Little Joe (Best Actress)
Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren, The Good Liar (Best Actor/Actress)

I miss Lacey Rose as an interviewer though. This one lacks any emotional connection to the people sitting around that table. Rose is just the best. But anyone is better than Galloway – my God was he horrendous.

Laura Dern doesn’t need exposure or visibility though, and Marriage Story doesn’t either. It’s about maximising awards chances for the participants/studios and generating engagement for THR, which is fine. But it would’ve been interesting to see someone like Pugh, Place or even Woodard on the panel who would have provided more contrasting perspectives, and have less visibility despite giving performances of a similar quality to those on the panel.

Well, Dern has been everywhere lately. You would think she was the lead in Marriage Story. She is working hard for that nomination.
