I may have the wrong date in my head. The 12th makes more sense since that is a Wednesday. I read somewhere that it was on the 14th and that got stuck in my mind.

Saw West Side Story for a third time and I believe it absolutely should win the SAG Ensemble award. Besides the six main characters every single performance in this film is a gem: Ezra Menas as Anybodys, Josh Andres Rivera as Chino, Corey Stoll at Lt. Schrank, Brian d’Arcy James as Officer Krupke, Patrick Higgins as Baby John are all standouts but every single performer is perfect. And then there are the six: David Alvarez, Ariana DeBose, Ansel Elgort, Mike Faist, Rita Moreno and Rachel Zegler. This film ticks the diversity box that often wins in this category in the past ten years and it has a large cast – IDK how many are eligible for the award? Just brilliant! IDK if it will win but it absolutely SHOULD win!

Caitríona Balfe deserves the Best Supporting Actress Award. She is the best hopefully she doesn’t get snubbed.

I just looked to see who was in the top five on the Goldderby odds on here. The only big surprise is that Marlee Matlin is still in fifth place for Supporting Actress but I bet that’s because most people haven’t gone on there to change their predictions in awhile (btw, she’s wonderful and would be a terrific nominee).

Here are the five frontrunners in each category according to the odds on here – in all four of the acting categories I have one prediction that is different than the five; I also have a dream nominee from each category that I really hope somehow makes it onto the list. I would love to hear yours for both predictions and name one for each category who you really want to see on the list when the nominations are announced!

Best Ensemble Cast: Belfast, Don’t Look Up, King Richard, The Power of the Dog, and West Side Story. I am predicting all five of these. I would love for Mass to replace King Richard in this lineup.

Best Actress: Jessica Chastian, Olivia Colman, Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman, and Kristen Stewart. I still think Jennifer Hudson will make it in here – I would replace JC with JH. JH is also my choice for someone I would love to see nominated.

Best Actor: Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Dinklage, Andrew Garfield, Will Smith, and Denzel Washington. I have DiCaprio in my predictions instead of Dinklage. DiCaprio is my personal #1 for 2021 in this category.

Best Supporting Actress: Catriona Balfe, Ariana DeBose, Kirsten Dunst, Aunjanue Ellis, and Marlee Matlin. I have Rita Moreno in my predictions instead of Marlee Matlin. I would love for Jessie Buckley to be in the lineup when the nominations are announced.

Best Supporting Actor: Jamie Dornan, Ciarin Hinds, Troy Kotsur, Jared Leto, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. I have Mike Faist getting in instead of Jared Leto. This is my #1 please let this happen pick!

I am very worried about TPOTD here. In the worst case scenario, I could see it getting Benedict and nothing else. It’s SAG, after all. No idea what all the DJs, weathermen and influencers like… Let’s hope Bronco Henry won over at least TikTokers, lol. I do not have it in ensemble. There are just too many big, flashy ensembles this year, unfortunately.

From what I’ve heard, CODA is almost guaranteed to get into the ensemble category. That means one of these front-runners is likely not going to make it.

Power of the Dog was always getting snubbed in ensemble.

What’s more interesting is if Dunst can make it or not. Her only SAG nomination is being in the Ensemble of Hidden Figures. Which she can thank #OscarsSoWhite for making that mediocrity an awards player. We don’t need to break this record.

I only see DeBose getting in for West Side Story. I don’t think enough SAG voters will watch the film in time for it to get in Ensemble.

    Belfast
    Being the Ricardos
    CODA
    Dune
    King Richard

I think Dune can overcome genre bias since it’s arguably TOP 5 and one of the most widely seen movies of the year. This category is always a mess to predict so I don’t care about my scores in this anyway. Marriage Story and La La Land weren’t Ensemble enough, but somehow Manchester by the Sea and A Star is Born were. It’s really random and it depends on who is on the comittee.

I’m probably going to change these because one of The Power of the Dog, Don’t Look Up and The Harder They Fall will get in. The only time Netflix has missed in this category (in the last 4-6 years) is when they don’t have a contender or when they contenders aren’t Ensemble friendly (2016, 2018). Last year they had 3.

I’m glad you mention this because I realized that I have all three out as well. 😬 Not smart.

As for WSS, it’s worth noting that voters have received neither physical screeners nor screening links. I am not sure that matters much though since there were in-person screenings.

The Power of the Dog feels like a classic SAG ensemble miss and yeah, if it’s gonna struggle anywhere it’s here.

This is total opposite land to me. SAG Ensemble has always been easy to call 4/5 of the nominees. Dune isn’t even in the top 10 here. It’s not as big of a player as Mad Max, which failed to make the cut, and that film actually had acclaimed performances…which Dune does not. Aside from maybe Charlotte Rampling’s cameo.

There are 5 completely obvious nominees in the category this year. The only question is maybe about The Harder They Fall surprising, but despite some early ensemble notices that doesn’t feel right at all.

Very worried about Olivia here. The late release for The Lost Daughter is not going to do her any favours.

FYC: Better Call Saul, The English and The Good Fight in all categories including Emily Blunt, Bob Odenkirk, Christine Baranski and Rhea Seehorn.
